Not so smart.
If I buy a season ticket on Smart Card ,between Glasgow and Edinburgh I can only use it on Scotrail or LNER. But a paper ticket is good for all Companies. Cross Country between Central and Waverley often suits me ,so no Smart Card for me!

It's valid on any operator that the paper equivalent would be valid on. If route "Any Permitted" then that's any TOC.

You can use the Scotrail Smartcard on Cross Country:
What services can I use my ScotRail Smartcard on?
You can use your ScotRail Smartcard on ScotRail and Cross Country trains, as well as Smart Season Tickets on LNER services. Your card can also be used on the SPT Subway and participating GrassHOPPER bus services.

It was the case, a while ago, that CrossCountry tried to claim that such tickets weren't accepted on their trains because of inadequacy in their technology. This was legally dubious and fortunately they've desisted.

They cant legally block you from travelling on a certain train on an 'Any Permitted' ticket, just because they dont have the technology go scan it - that's their prerogative, and not your fault.

Got a paper ticket now, just thought it was strange when website promotes smartcard and makes anything else more difficult to purchase.

Think the confusion arises as it is a Season Ticket,(Monthly)

Let’s say you needed to make a one off trip from Glasgow to Carlisle. All you’d need is a Carstairs - Carlisle in combination with your season ticket.

In these circumstances a Glasgow - Edinburgh season ticket must be accepted by Virgin Trains West Coast and Transpennine Express in addition to the normal validity with Scotrail, LNER and CrossCountry. Even Caledonian Sleeper would be required to accept it as part of a longer journey south (I don’t call at Carlisle).

The TOCs really need to get their act together on this, it’s not difficult to understand.

On the Scotrail website under Season Tickets, What you need to know it states:
Paper Season Tickets are valid on all operators services, Smartcard season Tickets are valid on Scotrail and LNER services.
That is confusing to me!
Just checked it just now and that's what it states

Any Permitted means it’s valid on any TOC.

Scotrail set the Any Permitted fare between Glasgow and Wdinburgh which means they aren’t allowed to introduce their own operator specific tickets.

Smart tickets are valid on Cross Country [XC] services. This is a relatively new development so it may have not been fully briefed out to all relevant parties yet.

We've had the same problem in GWR land, whereby XC were refusing to accept tickets loaded on to a GWR touch smartcard in spite of them being perfectly valid. A few stern words from GWR's smartcard project team has changed the issue.

Have had two replies from customer relations, only to remain confused by what I am told and differing information on the Scotrail website, however a completly new anomoly has come to light that LNER do not accept daily smartcard tickets, only seasons!
All a bit of a shambles.

They can't unilaterally decide not to accept such tickets. The restrictions applying to a ticket don't vary depending on its medium.
