Soham popped up in the press this week (Ely Standard). The suggestion is opening 'within 2 years' which can be taken with a pinch of salt at this stage but perhaps it should be on the list?
Network Rail begins noise testing as work gets under way on £20m Soham station to connect with Peterborough and Ipswich
https://www.elystandard.co.uk/news/business-news/two-year-timetable-for-20m-soham-station-1-5955584
The new station will include a single platform, footbridge, car park, station forecourt, drop-off point and ticket machines. The proposed platform would be 102 metres long, and there would be associated waiting shelters, lighting, a public address system and information screens.

There will also be a built-in allowance for a future second platform in advance of any double tracking of the line between Ely and Soham. It is currently a single track. The station would also be future proofed against the potential for increased demanded for container traffic to and from the Port of Felixstowe.

The project has been allocated funding needed to bring it to completion. At present, £3.2 million has been allocated to the delivery of the current phase. An additional £20 million has been allocated in the CAPCA budget to deliver the station through to design, construction and final handover. As part of the overall sum requested, around £7 million will be used to ring fence monies to upgrade the station to include a second platform.

One immediate question, why 102metre platform(s) when a 4car FLIRT bi-mode is 80.7m long?

Where do we stand with regards to the 2 Devon openings of Marsh Barton and Kingskerswell? Or have they sadly now stalled?

I believe Devon County Council are hopeful that Marsh Barton, on the main line south of Exeter, will still happen despite an increase in costs. However, plans for other new stations in the county as part of the Devon Metro scheme seem to have gone very quiet indeed.

2021. Brent Cross West
On Thameslink North route between Cricklewood & Hendon .
Brent Cross West construction starts in 2020 and complete by May 2022. Contract awarded later this year. https://www.building.co.uk/news/builder-wanted-for-new-40m-london-train-station-/5097716.article
Barnet council is eyeing up contractors for a £40m job building a new rail station on the Midland Main Line and Thameslink routes.

The project is one of several forthcoming under the council’s £4.5bn regeneration scheme, which will include work to modernise Brent Cross shopping centre in north-west London.

The Brent Cross West station has outline permission but a contractor is needed to design, build and commission the station before handover in May 2022.

On the subject of new stations, does anyone feel like speculatiing on the probability of Charfield re-opening, and if so likely timescales? I think the facts are:
- Charfield station closed in 1960s.
- Current house-building plans could cause Charfield to expand from 1000 to 2000 homes in the next few years (http://charfieldparishcouncil.org.uk/?page_id=1384).
- There's a fair amount of commuting into the area due to local employers.
- The nearest adjacent stations are about 8 miles north and south.
- I assume that a re-built Charfield station would have a similar hourly DMU service to Cam & Dursley.
- I'm not aware of any plans to electrify the line, so the trains would be slow-accelerating DMUs. Would this impact faster Inter-Cities on the same line?
- A map view suggests there's a fairly amount of open fields available to build a new station, some of which is being used for new houses.
- https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-gloucestershire-47356518 says " ... £300,000 ... towards preparing an outline business case for the train station". How much of a statement of intent is that?

It looks like some of the proposed stations in the Bristol area are about to take a small step towards actually being built. Stations at Ashley Down, Henbury, North Filton, Portishead, Pill, Portbury and Charfield are mentioned. Go Charfield!
https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-news/seven-new-train-stations-set-2976851
Portway is well under way (through the background process, not construction yet). Charfield seems to have been snuck in without industry input (like is there enough space in the timetable to call, etc.).

The Mayor of the West of England is talking about a twice-hourly service at the new Charfield station, which is double the frequency of the service currently at the adjacent Cam & Dursley
https://www.gazetteseries.co.uk/new...and-ride-and-new-charfield-station-announced/
so I hope they are planning to talk to the railway companies at some point. It will be great if it happens, but I'm not holding my breath.

https://www.elystandard.co.uk/news/soham-set-for-final-rail-station-approval-1-6275162 says

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority will be asked next Wednesday to back a recommendation to give the project the green light.

A funding package and contract "will fast-track the work, significantly bringing forward the start date" said Mayor James Palmer.

A start date of September 1, 2020 is being considered.

"Work so far is on target," said the mayor. "The third stage of the 'GRIP' process - Network Rail's eight-stage sequence for putting in rail infrastructure - has been completed on time and has been evaluated and signed off."

A combined authority spokesman said: "Instead of working through the GRIP 4-8 stages sequentially, the mayor's proposal asks the board to fund GRIP stages 4-8 - which cover detailed design and actual construction to handover - as one compressed package.

"By cutting through the conventional delivery timetable, the mayor has made it possible for work that would not usually begin until GRIP Stage 5 to be started immediately."

The spokesman said the mayor's "challenging approach" would also mean the project coming in under the budget previously set.

"Board members will be asked to approve £18,636,889 of funding for the remaining phases," said the spokesman.

James Palmer's "challenging approach" to the construction of the Ely Southern bypass, saved a couple of months in the surveying of the ground conditions. The project then came in 50% over budget. Deeper foundations would have been required in any case, but if they had time to find that out early on, perhaps they could have trimmed other bits of the specification.

Presumably those being asked to sign off the spending are fully aware of the 'previous' and will have thought through the implications of a repeat .......... [though this time any risk may be far less obvious]

But why the rush? Nearly £20m for 1 tp2h?
In the history of the railway has so much ever been spent on so little?

I can see two reasons. He's from Soham, and building a station will bump up land values. He wants things to move quickly, as he's up for reelection in 2021.

Beyond 2021
Gabalfa, Crwys Road, Loudoun Square, The Flourish (other names are available); Skelmersdale; East Linton; Renton; Brent Cross West
That'll be Reston, not Renton, which has been happily serving passengers for the last 170 years!

Beyond 2021 needs Old Oak Common, Birmingham Interchange, Birmingham Curzon Street, Manchester Airport (HS2), Leeds New Lane and East Midlands Hub adding :)

Particularly the first and last ones, as those involves a new Network Rail station as well for local folks to use without touching an HS2 train.

Minor correction - they shifted the Leeds HS2 terminus north a bit to adjoin the existing station, so it's not going to be treated as a separate station now. It'll just be Leeds (or possibly Leeds City Station, but probably not Yorkshire Hub).

Thorpe Park may be separate from Leeds East Parkway, which I thought was a proposal for a turnback station around Micklefield. Unless they decided Thorpe Park would serve both purposes. @deltic08 might know.

Network Rail have been contracted to build the new station in Soham - expected opening 2022: https://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/ne...muy15OEUF_P5wH51j2ddJCjxUkrYp0_GzNGQf9gL0G6RI

A new station will be built in Cambridgeshire after a deal was agreed with Network Rail this week.

For the first time since 1965, Soham residents will have a train station right on their doorstep.
