I've yet to experience an 800, so can't comment on them, but the last HST ride I took, from London to Edinburgh, was a shockingly bad ride that almost threw me out of my seat a couple of times.

I've never encountered a HST like that!
Most of the HSTs I've been on have had a slightly bouncy ride, but they absorb impacts like points very well, and have a very smooth ride overall!
Contrasted to an 800s which is very nervous and jiggly, or a 222 which doesn't absorb impacts as well

The LNER ones are particularly bad mainly because of the bogie suspension and track quality of NR.

I have noticed that there are a few jolts between Padd and Reading. mainly through Twyford and Maidenhead ;)

The ride on the LNER Mk3s can be awful at times, combined with a particularly squeaky vestibule and I would far rather the thrum of an underfloor engine.

The annoying thing about the HST is that, invariably, the windows will end up being left partly down which ends up with a blast of cold air into the carriage every time someone goes through the sliding doors.

Eh? Wrong way round?

Apologies - I didn't realise red in first and blue in standard was ever a thing. Unless you're talking about pre-refurb when standard was turquoise and first Green (I think). Haven't seen that decor for around ten years.

The EMT HST First seats are rather uncomfortable if you want to work or eat - the low seating position means you have to perch and sit up - not the most comfortable! The crashy ride doesn't help matters either.

The First seats on the Meridian 222s are much better (and the ride a lot smoother) - although then you're dealing with the Faraday cage effect making a decent mobile hotspot signal almost impossible to maintain.

+1 from me on this with regard to EMT's standard class.

I find the HST's cramped, you have scramble over the fixed armrests to get to the window seat, tables close to the seats etc, whereas the Meridians are more spacious, have higher backed seats which are higher off the ground which I find far more comfortable. And last time I rode on an EMT HST the ride, compared to a Meridian, was appalling.

not an issue on PRM'd HSTs (Persons with Reduced Mobility modified High Speed Trains)

is this because of some exemption or something...?

Yes, a derogation will be granted due to no replacement. There is no chance of such a sizeable fleet being removed at the end of the year with nothing to run in it's place.

Derogations and dispensations are being granted nearly every week for the post 31 December deadline on different fleets all over the country. Minor things that were intended to be done for full compliance but that won't now been done in time.

don't want to be taking the p*ss after the other day, but have you got a link to the PRM derogations document...? I'm guessing the version I read a while back is rather out of date now. I did hear that the East Midlands franchise would get new trains in 2022.

Try going through Southcote Junction onto the Berks and Hants standing in the corridor near the doors. I used to commute between Reading and Theale on Tuesdays and it always made me jump :D

Yes that's also a bit ruff. Going through Slough at speed bumps and wangs from side to side.

I like HSTs and it's a shame that their days on top link GWR and ECML work are limited but they can't go on forever, slam doors and toilets that spray track workers with brown mist need to become a thing of a past and their IET replacements aren't even that bad. The furthest I've done on an 802 is Bodmin Parkway to paddington, yes the seats are a bit hard and I wish there was a buffet coach but there were no issues with ride quality and the interior arguably looks better than GWR's standard HST interior.

so far, yes. which sets are those...?
I think that Rail Blues is having a dig because only two of the refurbished ScotRail sets have been delivered thus far, whilst ignoring the fact that other TOCs will be receiving/have received HSTs with PRM modifications.

I guess that's one way to reduce complaints about the appalling ride of Mk4s...

I've never had my drink spontaneously launch itself across the carriage from a seat back table on a mk 3. The same can't be said for the mk 4's !

What about the lighting, its ridiculously bright. If I was travelling long distance at night I would never sleep and feel as if I had hang over on an IET. At least on HST's there half lighting which is much smoother on the eyes.

Absolutely. There's plenty here that consider underfloor engines to be the tool of Beelzebub, but generally most modern stock is sufficiently sound-insulated for it to be absolutely fine. The random squeaking of HST gangways sets my teeth on edge and is extremely unpleasant after a while.

I find the Mark 4 much superior. After my last experience, I'm now keen to avoid LNER HSTs whenever I can.

I shall miss the HSTs. I've loved them since my first ride on one from Kings Cross to Darlington back in 1980. They were the height of luxury compared to the Class 302s I was used to.

Having lost so much rolling stock that I loved as a youngster, my advice to all enthusiasts is to get out and enjoy them while you can. Time stops for none of us.
