Surely there is a category between 'looks pretty' and 'unsafe' and that is something like, 'has adequate preventative maintenance to minimise/avoid inflated maintenance or unnecessary capital costs.' Let's face it, that is the main purpose of painting something!

True. I would suggest that some of the station infrastructure on Merseyrail is not meeting that need.

About 6 years ago there were plans to demolish the unused brick built waiting room on one of the platforms at Aigburth station and replace it with a "bus shelter" waiting room. They were also going to tear down the 150 year old cast iron canopy.

To cut a long story short, the local councillors got involved, a petition was started, and the original structures were saved. The brick building was converted back into a waiting room and the canopy was renovated and reinstalled.

Used Bimbling since the 70's at least.
Possible it may have military usage as well.

I understood it to be a slang military term, meaning to walk casually or slowly, perhaps without any clearly defined purpose or destination, and whilst off duty.
Quite different from walking smartly or marching from A to B whilst on duty.
An NCO whom I know was on duty in London for the Olympics, and mildly reprimanded men under his command for "bimbling around, like civilians, rather than walking or marching more purposefully"
To bimble implies a bit more purpose and planning than to bumble, but not much.

Example "I went for a bimble around town, undecided as to which pub to visit, or perhaps go the curry house"
In contrast to "I walked to the station, making only a very brief stop to purchase a newspaper, knowing that I had to catch the 08-32 train"

Not sure whether to start a separate thread for this, but stations between Hooton and Rock Ferry are having platform work done to prepare for the new trains, resulting in line closures, altered timetables and RRBs. This is on until the 22nd (I think) of March. Will the other lines require the same, and if so does anyone know when?

Yes, all lines need(ed) it but most have been done. It was the Southport line last week, which usefully for two journeys I needed to make meant direct services from Ormskirk to Hunts Cross (for the first time ever?)

Works should be completed by the middle of May, they're on phase 7 of 11, West Kirby & New Brighton branches are next up for works in April.

Looks so much nicer, Cressington is also a nice traditional station with old style lamp lights. I like the art deco ones on the Wirral on the West Kirkby line.

I really like the idea of giving each station its own style in keeping with the local area - with LEDs, traditional looking lighting is a good way of doing that for not much cash.

On the Hunts Cross line there was some talk recently of reopening St James Station, which I think would get confused with James Street, so maybe Baltic Triangle or something else might be used. I presume as it would be a reopening it would be all new fittings, however if there was anything from the past construction which could enhance it, i'd be for that.
Incidentally James Street has a very atmospheric platform, not sure which one, I don't use it often.

Yeah, I'd expect it to be called Baltic Triangle. There's nowt left of it bar some messy platform remnants so it'll be a new build effectively. Will probably look a bit like Conway Park.

It's the one that leads to the line that joins the Link and the Loop only, so it's only used very occasionally for trains terminating at James St.

Coming from W&B land I always believed Merseyrail stations to be far better maintained than those by ATW. It doesn't look much like TfW has yet to make much change with the North Wales stations. Of course, signage accross the majority of Wales & Borders franchise is largely from BR days also. I remember the turquoise strip of ATW being peeled off from my local station, to reveal the 'Regional Railways' blue stripes beneath (probably also badged with a North Western Trains logo in the interim!!). Now of course these turquoise strips have white TfW vinyls applied over the top of those...!

I don't think Merseyrail Electrics' signage is absolutely ancient; it seems better quality than elsewhere. Interestingly, City Line stations which are operated by Northern are, of course, in identical Merseytravel colours. Who is it that pays for this, the PTE or the TOC? Regardless the continuity between ME and NT stations in Merseyside is commendable.

Age of signage really sosen't matter, it is the information carried and it's clarity which it is important.

There's a footbridge at Hessle that makes me ask the same question as it looks unsafe. The picture below was from 2013 but it looks worse now.

Rusting is largely superficial, the appearance often made worse by blistering of paint. Usually, you only need to start worrying about safety when holes start to appear in structural parts.

It did appear to me that on some of the supports on Kirkdale station chunks of metal have indeed rusted away, rather than surface rust which if it was dangerous would render the entire network unfit for use! (All rails have a coating of surface rust).

It's years since I left EMT-land, but I can only assume they must have drastically improved their maintenance if you say they're now maintaining to a good standard. EMT was infamous for cutting budgets on everything, including maintenance, cutting staffing levels and only really doing anything substantive if someone else paid for it but then claiming it as their own work. They were very good at making things look pretty, though, so that you'd assume all was OK if you didn't look closely.

The EMT units are ok, better than TfW or Northern. But there's still room for improvement, as they can be quite dirty, especially between the seats, and the 222s and HSTs are looking quite tatty.
The Reading based turbos, whilst not perfect, are cleaner, and are better maintained.

At least Merseyrail stations are staffed for most of the day - neighbouring authorities have run down and unstaffed stations

I agree, Years ago when I used the stopper from Eccles or Patricroft towards Liverpool -I noticed that the stations were better kept. Freccles -who look after Eccles station, Have done a great job in recent times - But I still think the Merseyside end looks better.

Yes, fully agreed.

As regards stations on the Merseyrail network itself, I have to say that in the main, they're reasonably well kept. For example, just about every Great Northern and SWT/SWR station I've used has been significantly worse. Merseyrail undoubtedly does a much better job of looking after its stations than trains which are awful in terms of cleanliness both inside and out.
