Exactly. Why else are trains having more and more seats shoved into them? When you look at it most times it'll tie into some franchise spec requirement to increase capacity whilst not actually allowing money to be spent on additional units.

Give it time. Gain in seats by going for 26m vehicles is quite impressive right now. But I'll wager that before ten years go past the DfT will be asking for more seats to installed.
I would hope in ten years time the DfT have no part in micromanaging the railways.

Oh what a happy day that would be! But I fear that now the Mandarins of the DfT (and the Treasury to be fair) have got a taste for exerting such significant control I doubt they'll give it up easily.

You'd think they'd have other stuff to do, especially at the moment.

That would lead to a change of contact on the IEP units, which chances are would cost the DfT extra money.

As such I would guess that the likelihood of the seats being squeezed in more would probably be fairly low of this is the case.

A five car set has struck a road sign while between Exeter and Castle Cary via Honiton, and has been damaged to the point of needing repairs that could take a long time to fix.

Done well to hit a road sign, i thought bi mode was between diesel and electric not between road and rail!

Seriously though, hasn’t there been an issue on that line with similar types of vandalism? I remember it making the news last summer, temporary signs from a set of roadworks placed on the line, I think near Feniton.

Its either the third or fourth such incident that I'm aware of in the past couple of years. Probably one to start highlighting for the BTP.

It was OK to run following inspection so may not be too bad

Is that the one that was I assume around 65 minutes late from Reading on its 15:09 to Paddington? I arrived back into Reading around 3pm after a look around the town and when I saw that on the board I was like 'Wow !' Not the biggest delay however.

I heard the automated announcer say it was due to an obstruction on the line.

It’s normally the Barnstaple branch which seems to be fairly regular for road signs dumped onto the track, however unfortunately there has also been a number of incidents as you say in the Feniton area on the “Mule” as well. It is something BTP are of course aware of as it’s a dangerous thing to do. Today’s incident was in the Broadclyst area so it seems to be an issue in the Exeter and mid Devon area.

Hello all, do class 800's run all the GWR lines right now, or only parts of it?

Wiki suggests:

London Paddington↔Oxford, Worcester, Great Malvern, Hereford, Cardiff,
Swansea, Carmarthen, Bristol, Weston-super-Mare, Cheltenham Spa, Taunton, Paignton.

&

London Paddington↔Exeter, Plymouth and Penzance.

Hi, does anyone know any further information on when the Bedwyns will move over to IET's?

thanks,

The first unit with camera deflectors has been doing some testing; I think they’re letting that run around in traffic for a bit to compare the build up of crud on the cameras to an unmodified unit to verify that the fix works before proceeding further. Allegedly shouldn’t be too much longer. The installation of the fix isn’t difficult.

Random Unit Trivia: To celebrate International Women's Day, along with "Women in Rail", 800014 has gained the bike/1st Class/nose end logo stickers, and has been named after
a) leading Swindon suffragette Edith New; and
b) Megan Lloyd George MP, the first female MP for Wales.

You wouldn't happen to know which one it is?

The covers only make a slight difference. I never found the seats uncomfortable, even though they are much harder than Mk3 seats.

I also find the IET seats easier to fall asleep in 8-)
