My film showing this train in action on 17th March 2019.

Apologies for taking until this evening to share this film here - I was up until after 2am making it and was just too whacked.

As I needed images of a Goblin Class 378 at Barking I decided to film the railtour train there too. Happily I got what I wanted - and even more! As the 1938 TS railtour train was running a few minutes early it stopped here for several minutes, I stayed where I was (at the back of the platform) as there were too many people milling around at the front of the platform and I wanted to film the 378 departing too. Hopefully filming 378's at this station will be a very short lived possibility.

I also filmed at Bow Road, things here did not quite to plan as I has wanted to film from the middle of the platform, approximately where I filmed a railtour many years ago. But service trains were scheduled to come too frequently so I went to one end of the platform and in the end it all worked very well. I did not see any other people with cameras here, which in a way was a shame as this is a distinctive Edwardian era historic station.

I intended to film the train at South Ealing when passing as ecs (empty coaching stock - does the LU system use this term?) but that journey did not run.

Because I only had a few scenes with the railtour train I padded out the film with other scenes from the stations it was filmed at (or meant to have been filmed at), including when InterCity went underground! Ah, if only such was still possible - and maybe yet it could still be .... as far as I recall some battery locos will be kitted out for CBTC!

One other comment. What weather! Sun, rain, hail, wind... almost an entire season in one day!!!

Enjoy!

Not really. ‘Running empty’, ‘stock move’ or ‘up as a Special’ are what tends to get passed around by the signallers and controllers.

It seems that they are almost sold out, there is limited availability in the rear car of journey 3 and that's it. Wouldn't be surprised to see it sell out before it starts next Sunday.

The London Transport Museum Friends newsletter quotes that Thales have scoped out an equipment solution which will be transferable between the 1938 Tube Stock and Q Stock for future running.

Did you know they want to use it on Adlwych shuttles next year and a tour to Heathorw is being planned from Today's Railways UK

The number one rule of LU heritage is to never believe the magazines. I’ve lost count of the number of times they’ve jumped the gun in announcing events that haven’t even reached any serious sort of planning...

The Aldwych story certainly has some basis to it. However last I knew it was still at the "aspiration" stage rather than definite. Realistically I don't see why it should be such a major problem, one consideration presumably being numbers of people versus how Aldwych station might be evacuated having to only rely on the spiral staircase.

Yes, it’s aspirational at this time. The largest stumbling block is the state of the signalling and the necessary remedial work to bring it up to a state where passenger trains can use it.

Would the lack of a lift make that much difference? Advice is always not use lifts in the event of a fire, so the evacuation route would be via the spiral staircase in any case.
It would be magnificent if it could happen, I'd definitely be up for a ride to Aldwych on vintage stock.
The market is there, look at the Post Office Rail.

It won't become an attraction like Mail Rail. Aren't there plans to sever the link to the branch at Holborn as part of the works there to create more circulating space?

Any running to Aldwych is likely to be a one off 'Hidden London' event like the recent Charing Cross trips. I'd expect the cost to be around £100.

Yes it is potentially an issue, as some stations (normally the deeper ones) are required to close when there’s no lift service. Aldwych is comparatively deep.

I suspect if they did run it then there might have to be some kind of capping on numbers per trip. Another way of doing it of course is to not allow people to leave the train at the Aldwych end.
