Update!

First week back after the Christmas break and we were at Orient Way carriage sidings doing our Class 379 traction conversion course.

Conversion is because the Class 379 is almost an updated, more modern Class 317 as we were told and I agree. More or less the same equipment that might be in a different place or slightly different equipment, it basically comes with an ECU.

Another enjoyable module yet again, it’s going so quick. We will be starting our hours on February 25th we’ve been told, just around the corner!

Next week is front end turns again, then the week after we start Module 4.

Yeah it’s going well. Basically going over everything again lightly: level crossings, single line working, temporary block working, emergency special working, defective equipment, list goes on.

Then we have a 2 day assessment next week on everything I believe.

Update!

This past 2 weeks we did module 4 which was rules revisited basically, going over everything again. With the new addition of ‘emergency special working’ added in December to the rule book. Essentially temporary block working but without the need for handsignallers.

Had two assessments this week and passed both!

Next week we have module 5 starting which is meant to be a simulator day but as we aren’t able to use them, I will be meeting a trainer at a depot to sit on a train and go through some scenarios and questions etc.

There is 3 weeks allocated to get everyone through one of these days so for the rest of the time we will each have a project to do which is a short presentation on a subject that we will present at the end of the 3 weeks.

Then after that on the 25th we go to depot! o_O

Update!

The last 3 weeks have been a bit of front ends, doing a module 5 presentation for tomorrow, my topic was level crossings.

It’s just a short presentation on the risks etc (we all had different topics) as something for us to do in these last couple of weeks because we all had our module 5 ‘assessment’ to check we were up to scratch to go on the track.

I have been deemed worthy.

One minute I am excited, the next minute - bricks.

So yeah I am going to depot Monday for an induction, then I start my hours!

I can’t believe how quick it’s come around.

Wish me luck! o_O

Thanks!

The module 5 was meant to be a simulator day with 4 scenarios, however the only sims that are available are for the new trains that are being used for training for the current drivers.

So I went to a depot and got on a stabled train, opened the desk and was talked through the scenarios and asked questions etc.

Mate this is amazing. Thanks for the updates.

No worries, hopefully this thread does its job!

Also sorry the updates are sort of fizzling out at the moment as we started our hours this week but I have been on rest days and spare jobs with my DI.

Tomorrow is set to be the first proper day out driving, hopefully all goes well! Lol.

Update!

First proper day out driving today. Was a lot better than I had imagined. I did 2 rounds of Liverpool Street - Hertford East in a Class 317.

I was only 3 mins max late all day so I didn’t do too bad.

Back in tomorrow for round 2!

Edit: Set_DRA, thanks! Yeah might do tomorrow, on airports all day.

Update!

This past week I have been doing brake handling, not my actual hours, they start Tuesday. Brake handling is basically just getting a feel for driving the train, braking, general control of it etc. It has been great so far, really really enjoying it.

I have been also learning the route, stations, braking points, level crossings, speed changes etc as I go and my instructor said I am doing well so it's looking good!

The routes I have driven so far are:

Liverpool Street - Stansted (also via Seven Sisters)
Liverpool Street - Hertford East
Bishops Stortford - Stratford

Still need to do (and eventually learn) Bishops Stortford - Cambridge

Can't wait to start racking up the hours next week on the road to qualifying. Great overall experience so far.

Yeah it’s going well thanks, around 20 hours now I believe.

Just mainly improving on the things above really but overall it’s going well.

Where are you at?

Good to hear things going good.

Any whispers about vacancies for Liverpool Street?
