Steel and glass building in looking like steel and glass building shocker.

I think the point is that the quality of design and materials isn’t as good as it should have been.

That presupposes the Maryhill Tesco is of poor design and made of poor materials.

I don't really see why such a comparison should be used in a derogatory way (which it clearly was).

The CGI shews a brutalist concrete slab along the frontage of the building (a walkway?). It looks ripe for multi-graffiti if left bare as in the picture.

It may well not be concrete, and even if it is I suspect the surface will be treated to resist graffiti.

I wouldn’t personally say the station design was poor, just architecturally mediocre, which is disappointing considering it fronts Glasgow’s main civic space.

I see a new photo has appeared on RailScot tonight which shows that much of the steelwork along the south face appears to be in place. Perhaps it’s time I paid a visit for another update. ;)

Indeed. Similar to the redevelopment of Haymarket (albeit a much smaller station) a real missed opportunity to build something really impressive.

Very impressive amount of work. The station is really starting to take shape.

To be fair Haymarket is a massive improvement on what was there before.

I'll take functional and spacious over impressive every day of the week.

One person's impressive is another's overblown and grandiose. At least it's not fake Victorian to 'fit in with' the rest of the square.

I read yesterday that they're trying to persuade Cumbernauld to give up the old clock from St. Enoch's, which was rescued by a private individual and given to Cumbernauld some years ago, although they have yet to find a location which does it justice.

I was a bit doubtful at first, because it seemed to be a shame to hide the newly-exposed shed from the square. What they are building though is starting to look really good, and I'm not sure what they could have put in its place. If the shed roof stretched further forward then you'd make that a feature, but as it's built it would always be oddly offset from the rest of the square

Another video update is on the way, to be released later today if all goes well.
I trust all those on the Open Doors site visits over the next few days will share some photos with us. Meanwhile, there is another photo on RailScot which shows the new concourse taking shape.

Here we go:

The lifts for platforms 8 and 9 have been taken out of service for refurbishment and 2 new steel beams have been installed at the west end of the Low Level platforms. Steel work for the main concourse extension is almost complete and site visits have been arranged for members of the public. The layout of the new concourse is now much clearer with the main features taking shape.

Bonus footage: On the day of filming, TV news crews turned up at Queen Street to record reactions from passengers to a signalling failure at Haymarket which caused many delays and cancellations, and we get to see a 7 coach 385 leaving for Edinburgh.

Another good update. Fantastic to see how quickly it's progressing now - I haven't passed Queen Street for a number of weeks. I'll be on the tour this weekend and hope to catch a few photos.

Likewise. It might not win any awards for its architectural looks, but as long as works as a station for people to get from A to B quickly and efficiently, thats all that matters at the end of the day.

That I don't disagree with. It's the look of it that I am referring to. In saying that, I'll take operational functionality over looks any day of the week.

Its currently in the shopping centre in Whats it Called? but the passageway it sits in has been closed off to the public for a couple of years, I was told it was in preparation for a cinema development that never happened.

Very interesting 385001, thanks for posting. Lots of detail in there that I hadn't noticed.

I trust you will forgive my totally unauthorised highjack of part of your second image, but now I see why this is a Network Rail project  :

I've been away for a bit, but back in Glasgow the net result of my searches to demystify the above has produced this from NetworkRailGQS on twitter (5th April):

Perfect weather today as we put up protection nets at #GQS ahead of work to install new roof structure

I can't seem to link to two photos in the tweet so I had to screenshot them:

Update from Network Rail about platform work starting next week.

Platforms 2 & 3 first to be worked on and will be out of use throughout July. Further phase between mid-September and mid-October to extend platforms 4 & 5.

Network Rail said:

New platforms on-track for Glasgow Queen Street

The transformation of Glasgow Queen Street station will enter a new phase this month as engineers begin work to complete the extension of the station’s platforms.
From April 15 until mid-June, work will be taking place behind the hoardings on the main concourse to create new buffer end stops for the extension of platforms two, three, four and five.

The platforms are being extended so longer electric trains can use the station, delivering more seats and faster journeys for customers as part of the £120m redevelopment of Glasgow Queen Street.

In order to install new infrastructure, the circulation space on the main concourse will be adjusted with the hoardings moving a further five metres into the station.

From mid-June until the end of the month, engineers will then be working in front of platforms two and three to uncover a space beneath the concourse that was originally excavated during the 2016 Queen Street closure.

Re-covered with a temporary concourse while other elements of the station redevelopment were being delivered, this previously-excavated area will form the basis of the 26m extension to platforms two and three.

Platforms two and three will be out of use throughout July while engineers complete the connection to the platform extensions and extend overhead lines, install coping stones, rebuild sections of platform wall and carry-out surfacing works.

Kevin McClelland, route delivery director for infrastructure projects, said: “The new-look station is beginning to take shape with the steel frame of the extended station building now in position and work underway to create the new concourse.

“Over the summer, our focus will also move back into the operational station area as we work to complete the longer platforms needed for the new electric trains which are now running on routes across the central belt.

“We will be working hard to complete the platform extensions as quickly as possible for customers and have phased the delivery of the new infrastructure to reduce disruption to services to a minimum.”

Bill Reeve, Transport Scotland's Director of Rail, said: “These forthcoming works mark another significant milestone in the delivery of this iconic station development.

“The Queen Street Station project is a key part of the Scottish Government's wider rail investment and, once delivered, will radically improve the gateway to the city and beyond. At the same time, it will provide faster, greener, longer services between Glasgow and Edinburgh, making rail an even more attractive travel choice for commuters and visitors alike.

“Every effort will be made to minimise the inconvenience to passengers during these works which are a precursor to the opening of the longer platforms later this year and the full station in March next year.”

A further phase of work will take place between mid-September and mid-October to extend platforms four and five.

Once completed, in 2020, the Scottish Government-funded redeveloped station will provide extended platforms for longer trains of up to eight carriages and an expanded concourse in a contemporary and distinctive building.

Does anyone have a diagram of the proposed platform extensions vs original layout?

All the 2019 extensions will at the buffer stop end into the councourse (pre dug out in the last work and filled with expanded polystyrene then covered over) hence the need for the concourse rebuild (as seen in photos) further away from the current buffers position.
