I think first where the first company to have this on new buses ordered hand brake on before doors would open and doors had to be closed before hand brake release for bus to move a think stagecoach had buses same model and age doors would open close on the move.*new buses*

The doors have an interlock safety feature that requires the handbrake to be on before the doors can be open, they need to be closed as well before setting off, its not a mandatory thing but one which operaters buy into now.

The Volvo 7900 or Geminis that Lothian have dont need the handbrake on for the doors to be open but the bus still wont move whilst the doors are open.

He emergency open button will still allow the doors to open whilst moving however.

Quite a lot of buses over the years have not had that feature, but instead that releasing the handbrake closes the door.

Modern Wrightbuses I have been on sound an alarm if doors are open while the bus is moving (usually as they are closing but not yet shut when the driver pulls away) but do not prevent the bus from moving entirely.

May well be the case, it's usual on taxis, and quite a number of children have been killed or seriously injured by falling out of bus emergency exit doors, as fiddling with the handle is just too tempting at that age.

to be fair I recall the doors on older B9’s and B7RLE wright bus doors to shut automatically if you moved off without them closed but they would let you move.

All ADL products now have brake interlocks on the front door when there opened.

They shut once the vehicle passes 8MPH.

Enviro300s probably have the worst interlock there is. You need to wait 7 seconds after pressing the door close button before the interlock releases. The Enviro500s (with the exception of 38210) don't have interlocks.
