My wife and I regularly travel from Redhill to Aberdeen from Gatwick Airport using easyJet. As of last month they no longer fly that route so we have had to consider alternatives. Heathrow is ruled out as that would entail driving round the M25 in the peak, so we are going to travel from Redhill to Luton Airport on Thameslink and easyJet from there.

We will be aiming for the 09.09 train from Redhill, with luggage, on a Tuesday in April. My wife has a blue badge and although she can walk fairly well cannot stand for a long time. Is that train likely to be heavily loaded and, if so, would First Class be any less rammed? If heavily loaded I assume London Bridge would be the first stop to see a large exodus?

If my memory serves me correctly, one section of First Class in declassified on certain Thameslink Routes, but i'm unsure which ones these may be, someone will no doubt pop-up and confirm.

You may also wish to consider flying Easyjet or BA from Gatwick to Edinburgh.

You would then have a choice:
- Take the tram to Haymarket for a direct train to Aberdeen
- A much shorter tram journey to Edinburgh Gateway and a train to Dundee, where there is a 13 minute same-platform connection to the Aberdeen train.

The latter option is slightly faster.

I think it's the rear first class section that's declassified. Sadly, that would mean a long walk to the first class section at the front of the train; others may be able to report on how heavily loaded the service at that time will be. The last leg from Luton Airport Parkway will be on a bus, but if you buy tickets to Luton Airport the bus fare is included.

There's also the direct train to Reading (one an hour) then the RailAir coach to Heathrow.

Another thing to note is that you could always fly from Heathrow, but use either National Express or Megabus between Gatwick & Heathrow? Or if you have Uber around the Redhill area?

Not sure what you're getting at there about the long walk (is it something to do with platform access at Redhill?), but it is the rear section that is declassified. The front section is for First Class ticket but it might be worth bearing in mind that using it would leave you with a long walk to the platform exit at Luton Airport Parkway.

Was simply pointing out that first will be furthest part of train from platform entrance, bearing in mind the OP's wife's ability to walk "fairly well". Sounds like the same issue at the other end, in which case first may not be worth the aggro.

09.09 - is that the first off-peak train from Redhill? In which case it would be busy. You'll have the exodus at London Bridge, and again at Blackfriars

It’s definitely a peak train (at Redhill). Being a train the tail end of the peak it is likely to be less busy.

The train comes from Horsham, and calls all shacks to Gatwick before running fast to Redhill. It is overtaken between Gatwick and Croydon by the following train from Horsham which gets to London earlier, and therefore seasoned commuters (and anyone who uses a journey planner) from Horsham, Crawley, and Three Bridges will be the later, quicker train. Similarly, there are plenty of faster options from Gatwick. Therefore the only people likely to be on th train at Redhill will be those from the village stations between Horsham and Crawley, and a few people who prefer the slow train. The train then calls at most stations to East Croydon, and it is for the passengers at these stations that the service is primarily aimed at.

All in, I’d say you will have a very good chance of a seat.

(Caveat, I’m not a regular user of this line!)

The rear first class is declassified, but it is possible that seasoned travellers will have bagged some of them. However the back of the train is never a popular place to sit otherwise, and being at the back is best for exit at Luton airport parkway. Therefore I would wait at the back end of the platform at Redhill, board the second to rear set of doors, look through into the declassified first class and see if there are any seats. If not, then just find a seat in the standard section.

The bus trip from parkway to the airport is a slight faff, but there is a bus at least every 10 minutes at that time of day, and there are a decent number of seats. If the first one is too full, just ask the Marshall if you can be first on the next one. The bus takes 5-10 minutes depending on traffic (which shouldn’t be a problem at that time of day, it’s worst at 0500 in the morning). Easyjet bag drop is more or less the first thing you come to in the departures hall (it’s on the right hand side of the ‘shore line’ as you walk into it) After dropping off your bags go straight through security as the airside facilities are much better than landside. I have never queued more than 10 minutes at security outside peak school summer holiday mornings, and of course there is assistance available if your wife needs it.

According to NRES, its the first off-peak, not the last peak.

My apologies. It’s still peak for going to Luton Airport, but is off peak for London. This is according to fares on the Thameslink website. I used the former!

Nevertheless being a train with 666 seats on it, and with lots of quicker options from Horsham, Gatwick etc that leave later, I can’t see it being that busy before Redhill.

Thanks guys, that's exactly the info I was looking for. I'll let you all know how we got on later in April!
