Just seen at Watford Junction - new stop boards for the Caledonian Sleeper, evidently thought up by someone with a sense of humour! I presume they’re being introduced for the new rolling stock, but it made me wonder what they have used hitherto - were they normal numbered ones?

Oh!! Well then I hold my hands up, that got me hook, line and sinker.

That’s a lot of effort to go to for an April Fool joke though - there were 2 of them, one on the down slow and one on the down fast! Didn’t look at the up lines, I was facing the wrong way!

It might not be then! But if it is it's certainly more inventive than the edible tickets that London Northwestern Railway have come up with. April 1st has been fairly quiet so far in the railway world.

Bit lame in general this year - the best one was a story about a bloke being caught drunk in charge of a horse in Cardiff but it turned out to be true!

Indeed, these are real and were first posted about well before today.

They didn’t use car stop markers at all for normal station stops but relied on the judgement and experience of the drivers. Since about 2008 there were a couple of sleeper specific car stops on platforms 2 and 19 at Edinburgh Waverley but these were only relevant to to shunting on the north side where it was important where the loco stopped in relation to TPWS equipment.

if it is they went to the effort of putting them at Glasgow, Edinburgh and Carlisle as well..............................

Indeed, it was established a couple of hours ago that it wasn't. Genuinely hadn't noticed them.

They've been spreading for a while, they appeared on the Highland Main Line a few weeks ago. They're definitely real and I agree quite amusing.

I'm sure that the Caledonian Sleeper PR team would be very flattered that it's been taken as a clever April Fool gag!

Here is the Sleeper with the newly placed ‘ZZ’ stop boards pulling into Arrochar & Tarbet making its way to Fort William as I wait for it to pass on the 05:21 Oban to Glasgow Queen St. [30/Mar/19]
