In order to keep passengers safe, new red lines are being painted which are even further back from the edge compared to existing yellow lines.

Staff with megaphones will be deployed, to instruct passengers to stand behind the red lines. A large recruitment drive is anticipated, which was today welcomed by the unions.

These proposals also ensure that the usable space for passengers who are waiting for trains is kept to an absolute minimum, as well as keeping everyone safe at all times.

A Network Rail spokesperson said "The new red lines will ensure absolute safety at all times. Any passengers entering the red lines will be politely reminded to step back."

This follows a successful trial at Manchester Piccadilly, which was proven to increase passenger satisfaction, ensure a non-stressed environment and a decrease in safety related incidents. In conjunction with the red lines, the improvements to passenger waiting environments include removal of clutter such as waiting rooms and benches.

Reaction on Twitter was mixed, as one non-believer quipped
Still better than 10 minutes of trying to avoid the red lines of platforms 13 and 14 of Manchester Piccadilly station. And finding that your train is a Merseytravel PTE specification Class 142 Pacer unit.

Non-stressed? Try going back there at 1730 on a weekday.

Perhaps the term 'kettling' is lost on these people.

It's a shame this isn't an April Fools joke - if you dare step forward when your train is arriving into the station, you will be barked at repeatedly.

I take it the April 1st component is the mass roll-out to other stations?

Do not cross the red line at any time for any reason! The story poster cut it fine, at 1127 - 'April Fools' items are invalid after 1200!
