Northern just got back to me to say that my application wasn’t being progressed any further. Gutted is an understatement! Oh well back to the drawing board.

Worst thing to receive, I have received 4 now it seems you dont get a chance if your not ex police army fire ect.

I was thinking that because they have skills that are tailor made for the rail industry. I would have thought that my experience running a public house would count for something.

I think a lot of it is down to luck because there are a lot of applicants for these jobs and your not telling me that there aren’t some very good candidates out there that have their applications rejected.

My only other thoughts would be to get a foot in the door by starting a different job in the rail industry and getting in that way. If it’s something you really want to do then you may have to consider that... I certainly am.

That’s not true. 2 of my course were ex police or military. Some ex guards, and the rest of us had normal jobs - lorry driving, IT etc. Yes, there’s a lot of recruitment from emergency services but that’s partly because they’re getting a massive amount of applications from that sector - lots of those people won’t be successful either.

I think they put all the names that pass into a hat and pick 10 out....It's probably as simple as that! It's an employees market. They can pick and choose out of 400 applicants. It will only get tougher

I've applied for the depot driver job at Blackburn and got a confirmation email. This didn't happen for either of my applications for the Manchester stations. They both just say application received when I go to my profile whereas the Blackburn one already says application in process. When I click on the Manchester applications it says an error has occurred but on the Blackburn one it does not say that. It would seem that because of an error my Manchester applications haven't even been processed. Not only that I now can't apply for the Blackpool position because it keeps saying fill all boxes marked in red, I have done but I still can't get passed the page where you upload your cv and cover letter. Very frustrating.

I see so many posts where theres mostly ex police ect i have had people message me saying they know an officer who applied with a pretty average cover letter/cv and went straight to next phase but this other person with a better cv/cover letter got rejected, seems to mainly be a northern thing as I have seen people say they apply to 2 different tocs with the same application and dont pass northern sift but pass the other just dont trust it

I know of 2 people in the last year from a Police background that have passed everything with other TOC's but been rejected at sift stage by Northern. It may help provide some of the evidence they are looking for, but it certainly doesn't buy you a free pass.

Anyone having issues applying for the Blackpool role or has previously applied for Manchester Picadilly and Victoria in December who hasn't received any email correspondence, Northern Hr are aware of it and are looking in to it. I emailed them and my applications have been passed to the recruitment team. I also spoke to someone on the phone and they said they are aware of the issue and are looking in to it.

I think they are aware of all the issues because the lady I spoke to said it was being looked in to. Keep trying to apply.

Haha know exactly who you mean though. Caused loads of confusion over years. Cheers
Hi Matt, i hope you dont mind me asking. When you filled in the Application form, did it just ask you for works history, qualifications and to upload a covering letter? or were there other questions relating to the job?. I applied on my phone and not sure if some of the application was missing. Thank you.

My application for trainee driver in Manchester on the DB site has said application in process and I was then asked to an interview were it then changed to Assessment, I sat the interview and it said Assessment still for a week or so and now says Application in process again.

Not sure what to make of it or if i'm reading too much into it?

I wouldn't read to much into it. Mine said exactly the same at that stage and then went back to Assessment when I got my assessment centre invite, which I had this week.

Ah fair enough then, was on a bit of a downer at first, but if its the norm then I can live with it lol.

How did the assessment go?

Well I passed so I guess pretty well lol. I didn't expect to find out for a few days but they told me on the day, and HR rang me the next day to discuss start dates later in the year. Seriously exciting

The actual assessment centre was a pretty full on day. The tests are intense but I quite enjoyed them. The 90 minute MMI at the end of the day was pretty draining. Main thing throughout the day was staying calm and not rushing to much. And asking questions if you are unsure on anything.

Yeah the guide is useful, especially in preparing you for the structure of the day. And definitely worth practising everything you can. The info on this forum was invaluable to be honest

And thanks! Can wait to get started!!

Mine was the same I attended an interview on 30th January. Since then it has gone back to application in process. I've emailed twice for an update but not had a reply.
