My step son has an LNER + connections advance which involves walking between Newark Northgate and Newark Castle.

Is it permitted to transfer between the stations by travelling via Collingham?

Apart from an aversion to walking he's going to be travelling with luggage so the walk is something he'd rather avoid.

Going via Collingham would still put him on the same train as per his itinerary from Newark Castle.

Since both trains connecting at Collingham are operated by East Midlands Trains upon which reservations are not possible, it is entirely possible to have booked to travel via Collingham anyway as it would make no difference to the ticket and reservation coupons held.

There is seemingly a SDR from Newark Stations to Collingham [CLM] at £3.10. Would this be of any use?

I think so, as you say providing all those trains are non-reserveable.

But you can avoid all doubt next time by specifying via: Collingham in a booking site. There are sites that will allow up to 3 via points in addition to up to 3 avoid points.

As an aside I see there is an actual fare from Newark North Gate [NNG] to Newark Castle [NCT] are there any sevices that do this journey direct? If not would the fare be valid via CLM?

From Yorkie's answer above this would not be required for PG's step son but may be of interest to others.

There's one direct service a day (Mon-Sat) in each direction. Two or three on Sundays.

People do this on a fairly regular basis to save the walk, you generally only have a few minutes to wait at Collingham for the connecting service.
