Hey,

Before Christmas I started seeing posters at YRK, SEM and MLT about TPE starting to issue Smart Card Season Tickets.

I currently have an annual ticket (expires on the 22nd Jan ), and after enquiring every week or so at SCA I have been unable to obtain one. I was told that they are able to transfer existing season tickets over so in future you can just "renew" online.

I've spoken to TPE over twitter about it and they're looking into the issue - but I was wondering if anyone here has managed to get their hands on one?

Ordering a new season ticket on the website I suspect may get you one - I've recently noticed options for ITSO tickets on their website.

There was a stall at Huddersfield a couple of days ago. I didn't look that closely but I think it's 'coming soon'

Interestingly, trying to apply for one and its asking me to upload a photo (fairly standard), but its saying I can store 0 photos on my account - oops!

Its a joint project with Northern and currently there is nothing coming down to us from the Ivory tower about when the smart card is going into full operation. Its apparently being testing by a select few over on the Wolds Coast route. I suspect once that's complete both companies should see some movement.

Every machine on Northern (presuming TPE too as we use the same equipment) now has the smart ticket issuing 'stuff' and the options are there to sell.

As is always the case for the people on board the trains and for us in the ticket office we currently have no way to check a pass in date nor do we have any way to change or cancel a smart card that has been bought online for the wrong date for example. I am fully expecting no training and to just be left to get on with it!

Android phones have NFC and theres an app that can read the smart cards and displays the names and expiry dates of what's on there - I cant remember what it's called though...

The Rambus app will read any ITSO smartcard. GWR have developed their own ITSO card checker.
I have bought a season ticket today and have been given it on a smartcard, this is what it looks like on said app

I wish WYPTE would let me load my annual Zone 1-6 Harrogate season ticket onto an MCard! It seems such a simple thing to be able to do, even if it means also having a counterpart rail ticket at least I could use the card at the ticket barriers a lot easier than a paper ticket!

TPE now have a process for transferring Season Tickets with a long time of validity left onto their smartcard. Up until recently you could only get a new replacement on their smartcard. You have to do it at the the ticket office you bought from and it is a very manual process where they write down details of the old ticket and a new smartcard and sent it off to the back office people who then contact when the ticket is ready to load onto the card.

As the new TPE Smart season tickets don’t come with a photo card what is stopping anyone using it? Is this now allowed or would it still be against the terms of use?

It isn't permitted, but I think they are less worried about this than they were about stopping people from claiming they had "lost" their paper season ticket, and then selling it on (or giving it to a friend or family member), whilst simultaneously getting a replacement for just the £10 admin fee. As it's a smartcard they can simply blacklist a "lost" smartcard. Of course, you're still supposed to carry some kind of photo ID in the name the season ticket is held, such as a (rail) photocard or a driving licence, but I would have thought that checks of this will be even rarer than checks of paper season ticket photocards.

Oyster cards have been without photo since their inception over 15 years ago. Southern Key cards originally had photos but now the GTR Key card doesn't.

Scotrail issue a photo and non photo smartcard. Think you need a photo one for season tickets. Also, if you install their app and have ncf on the phone you can see what is loaded and expired on your card if you put the 2 next to each other.
