Epsom is two minutes from the Clock Tower in the market-place - as good a measure as any of the town centre. I used to live there and now my nearest town is Dorking, which has three stations, all of which are poorly-sited. Ironically, the least well-served is probably the best-sited - Dorking West!

Manchester Oxford Road and Picc are both very central.

It depends on where you define the centre of Manchester. Piccaddilly Gardens which is the start of the main shopping area is 4 minutes on the tram from Piccadilly Station and the Town Hall which is a common definition of the centre of a town or city is 12 minutes away on the tram.

If you were to class Arndale shopping centre as the main shopping area, then Victoria is more central.

Preston is about 12 minutes from the Harris (although about 1 minute from one of the main city centre shopping centres - going into town we always used to get off the bus at the train station as it was central enough!)

Nottingham about the same from the Council House.

For a decent size town or city it's going to be something hugely disruptive to the city like the old Nottingham Victoria (6 minutes) or a town which grew up around the station isn't it?
