Apologies if I have missed a thread about this, but apparently WCRC are running a shuttle on the Windermere branch on Easter Eve and Easter Day when the main line is closed. Otherwise both branch and main line are RRBs. No timetable on RTT as yet.

Passengers will be able to travel on a specially-chartered shuttle train between Oxenholme and Windermere on the Lake District railway line this weekend.

Due to essential Network Rail engineering work on the adjoining West Coast main line over the Easter weekend, plans are already in place for a comprehensive bus service to replace trains.

The important rail upgrade work is part of the Great North Rail Project.

Now, with the weather set fair ahead of the Easter bank holiday weekend, a Lakes Line shuttle train has also been arranged for customers to provide they with an additional travel option on Saturday and Sunday.

This Lakes shuttle service, which will be free of charge, was jointly devised by Network Rail, local MP Tim Farron and charter operator West Coast Railways.

Times for Saturday are now on RTT. It's 0937/1037/1137/1337/1537/1737 ex Oxenholme, 1006/1106/1206/1437/1637/1837 ex Windermere.
Note that while the hourly service is running (AM) there's only 4-6 minutes turnaround time at each end, then 66 minutes dwell at Oxenholme 1231-1337, then 35 minutes at each end until finish. No sign of how the set gets to Oxenholme at commencement.
Surprised there's been no mention of any journeys on Monday, the NT service doesn't resume until early afternoon.

Much further than twelve trips to Windermere and back.
What about the retention tanks?

Much as I like loco hauled trains, I can't help feeling that the money could have been better spent on 2-3 extra buses to run Lancaster-(Oxenholme?)-Kendal-Windermere.

What and clogg up the roads at Easter in such lovely weather. So not realistic.

The Lancaster to Kendal section is motorway/dual carriageway, and one extra bus an hour won't make much difference (and might even keep at least 3 cars off the road).
I would guess that the WCRC would result in more cars trying to access Oxenholme/Kendal, neither of which are easy places for parking from experience, whereas running RRBs direct from Lancaster might encourage more people to use rail as far as there.

Judging by the Northern website, the chances of crews being available on Sunday in the NW are even less than usual :(

I guess it's actually double that plus round trip mileage from the depot, in reality. Surely that's still not even approaching the typical range of a 158 though?

No, it's twelve trips in total (six on each of the two days), plus mileage to depot and back.

Indeed it isn't.

Could someone remind me please; when West Coast ran a service for two weeks in June 2018 did Northern provide replacement buses as well?
Yes. Or rather, Northern were already running buses, rather more frequently and for a greater part of the day. Much the same as this weekend.
