Derby 'explosions' rock city as plumes of black smoke seen for miles
A major explosion has rocked a Midlands city this afternoon with dramatic photos surfacing on social media.

Images capture huge plumes of thick smoke billow from Derby city centre after reports of explosions.

Residents in the East Midlands city say they've heard three explosions in the last hour.

Plumes of smoke can be seen for miles across the city after the blast, which appears to have been in Stores Road, Derby.

Certainly seems that way. Many southbound XC services going “off grid” after Clay Cross. Journey time Chesterfield to Derby via Erewash Valley about 30 minutes, thus a delay of about 10 - 15 minutes with reversal at Derby.

EMT 13.29 Sheffield to St Pancras seems to have made it as far south as Breadsall before reversing back to Chesterfield with two hour delay. Other EMT services appear to terminate and start from Derby thus leaving Chesterfield and Sheffield to XC.

Correction - the EMT Fasts are going through to Sheffield via Erewash with a time loss of about 20 minutes but the ‘slows’ are terminating in Derby

Diversion via Melbourne is very unlikely as it is 9 months since they went that way. A time loss of 20 minutes going south or north from Derby is recoverable if not guaranteed. Many services at this time of day will not have return legs, or only short ones ( Penzance to Plymouth, or Glasgow to Edinburgh) anyway.

The 13.29 1C50 from Sheffield has been cancelled at Derby 2 hours after being turned back from Derby and travelling north then south then north via Erewash 133 minutes late. My daughter is on it.

Sorry to be a pedant, but it's 40 year's since any trains went via Melbourne as the line closed in 1980 and the tracks lifted in 1988. It is an interesting walking route with an interesting history as a military training railway in WW2. I think you must be referring to the Castle Donnington line which is still open and used for freight only.

Oops! Sorry, you’re right

Services seem to be running again, according to the boards at Derby Station at least.

However, the Matlock route seems to have been cancelled for the rest of the evening?

If other services are resuming running past the trouble spot, seems a bit silly for EMT to just cancel the rest of the Matlock services for the day.

I will say however, information on their site was relatively good, although I had to go to their twitter to find details of the replacement bus services.

The bus services were also put in place fairly quickly and as much service as can run has run so clearly some good planning in place in case of these situations!

Services still seem to be diverted via Erewash

The line wasn't handed back until about 10pm...
