I intend to travel from Honiton to London Waterloo tomorrow at 7.12 - attend a meeting in London and then catch a train from Euston to Warrington Bank Quay.

I wish to buy an open return ticket off peak from Warrington to Honiton via London - using my senior railcard.

If the meeting goes longer than I expect - such that I wish to board the Euston train during peak times am I able to do this, or must I wait until 7.00pm?

Kind Regards and Thank You for your help.

Assuming you are using this ticket (a Honiton-Warrington BQ off peak return with Senior railcard), you can only leave Euston between 3 and 1845, so you must wait.

The same applies if it is a Warrington-Honiton ticket.

The relevant restrictions on that particular ticket between London and Warrington are shown in the text of restriction codes 2C or 9I (the same but reversed):
Not valid on trains timed to depart:
  • London Euston after 04:29 and before 09:26 or after 15:00 and before 18:45 (Afternoon restrictions do not apply on Fridays)

If you bought the ticket from Lancaster then you could travel in the evening peak, for a few pounds more.

(I am assuming you are buying an off-peak return and only using the return portion, but this wasn't explicitly stated).

Thank You.

So presumably I can catch the 14.30 or 14.43 , but not the 15.30 (the most likely time!) so will probably have to wait until 19.30 - unless I can pay a supplement.

Presumably I can buy a peak ticket at Honiton - may be cheaper than paying the supplement at London.

The supplement would usually be the difference in price to the relevant Anytime fare, but in this case because of the enormous disparity between the Anytime Return and Off-Peak Return fares, it is cheaper (and the correct procedure) to charge the cost of a new Anytime Single instead. Of course, it is therefore cheaper, if you do end up missing the 14:43, to simply purchase a new ticket from Euston rather than paying the Anytime fare from Honiton (which would be more than the Anytime fare from London, understandably).

Note that you can get Advance tickets up to 1 hour before the departure time of the train on Virgin Trains, so it may still be possible to get a reasonable price if you just miss the 14:43, say for the 16:30. Alternatively one other way of getting to Warrington that wouldn't cost as much as an Anytime Single (without waiting till past 19:00) would be to travel via Reading and Birmingham, buying a new ticket for the stretch between London and Reading (as that ticket also isn't valid out of Paddington at that time). The final option I can recommend is to buy a combination of tickets on www.trainsplit.com, possibly using a train via Birmingham.

Thank You.

You certainly know your train information! - I may try the Reading option presumably out of Paddington - otherwise I will wait until 19.30.

I thought that it was the time you started your journey that was important - but I presume that doesn't apply to London routes.

I normally travel from Honiton to Warrington, via Birmingham, and you were the person who saved me £240 per year from previous posts!

Kind Regards

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

Yes it looks like I will have to wait!

Thanks - I am not sure how I buy a ticket from Lancaster?

I don't recommend this as the outward portion of a Honiton - Lancaster tickets prohibits Break of Journey. Alighting at WBQ using this ticket could therefore be problematic.

As I said - I was assuming that he was only using the return portion, based on the information given in the first post (i.e. buying the ticket from Warrington, but using it from Honiton), and there would be no problem using the return portion to alight at Warrington.
I guess now that probably wasn't correct, but I can't really tell from the information given.

It would be helpful if the the OP advises whether it is Warrington to Honiton return portion he is using?
