Hi guys, hopefully this is the place to post this. I'm currently planning my next venture out with Newcastle being a possibility to clear the Heaton based Pacers that I wouldn't have seen during jaunts to the North West. A question has been asked regarding the operations of 142s in the Newcastle area these days with the possibility that these are now working further south. Could any of you confirm this for me please?

From my experience, it would seem that more and more services through Newcastle are becoming 156 and 158 operated, especially after the timetable change in a couple of weeks. As someone brought up in the area on a diet of scruffy HT 142s in the same state that Northern Spirit left them in, having a shiny looking 158845 trundle past me on a Morpeth service a couple of weeks back was very strange!

You will probably have yourself more luck with Heaton based Pacers on the Saltburn to Bishop Auckland Line, but there will still be some working around Newcastle for the time being, so it won't hurt to go up there as well.

There's at least five 142s diagrammed on the SLB/BIA circuit most week days and one sitting spare at Middlesbrough in the HST sidings from 1000 onwards. Some Durham Coast services are booked 142 also, the Danby and Battersby services are booked 142s. NH based 142s are extremely rare in the NE nowadays. So HT units are more likely to turn up in the area.

The final Sunday service on the Esk Vallley to Whitby is currently diagrammed for a 142 (I was on it yesterday and have done it a few times before). I've looked at the timetable change and that service will remain pretty much intact, but will start at Hexham rather than Newcastle. What’s the probability of it still being a 142 after the timetable change?

Not sure but expect to see more 158s around. The Battersby service is diagrammed a 158 from May and the afternoon Whitby is too. Although that service is currently booked a 156.

Have they started crew training for 158s on the Whitby line yet?

142092 - 15:05 Sheffield to Adwick - 2nd unit in, behind 144009, but dropped at Doncaster platform 8 due to a problem with the door controls (not working in back car of the 142, the guard kept having to open them from the 142's front car)

142089 - 15:24 - Sheffield to Bridlington
