In foreign parts, there is of course the one-time "oversea railroad" from the Florida mainland a little way south of Miami, along the Keys island chain to Key West -- that link now furnished by a replacing road, in many places using the original rail bridges / viaducts.

A47 west from Dereham to Necton follows the old Dereham - Kings Lynn line.
A17 Kings Lynn - Sutton Bridge follows the old M & GN route

A683 towards Morecambe - used to be the Green Ayre-Morecambe line

That was really always supposed to be the A589 even though it carried signs for the A683.....the authorities got it wrong.
Made even more confusing as the A683 now uses the Bay Gateway instead, the rail line is now definitely the A589.......except some of the wrong signs are still there

Not that much around London, the M25 on the Staines West line has been mentioned; some of the line from Merton Park to Tooting via Merton Abbey is now Merantun Way.

Slightly further afield, a part of the A267 around Mayfield is built on the Eridge to Polegate line. A section of the Lee on Solent line has had the B3333 built on it. Much of the trackbed of the Upwell Tram from Wisbech has been swallowed up with road widening.

Busways at Cambridge, Luton and Gosport are built on former railway lines. Arguably the first two are not true roads as they require special vehicles, but Gosport is simply a road reserved for buses.

Many of the secondary railway routes in France were transferred to local authorities at closure and were subsequently converted into roads. Most were to become single-lane minor roads some became main roads. Some old routes can be followed almost in their entirety by car. I have been blogging about some of these in the South of France and there are links in this forum to some of these.

I think the A16 into Grimsby now takes up part of the old Grimsby-Louth Line.

The Leek & Manifold narrow gauge line in Staffordshire has been converted to either a footpath/cycleway or into a minor road at its northern end - the latter even passing through the old tunnel. Probably carries far more cyclists and walkers now than it ever did passengers...

The A579 Atherleigh Way between the East Lancs Road and Atherton is built over the trackbed of the Bolton & Leigh Railway and its extension towards Kenyon Junction.

(The B&LR was of historical importance as the first public railway to open in Lancashire, built by George Stephenson and pre-dating the Liverpool & Manchester by a year or two, although missing some of the novel "modern" features pioneered on the the L&M.)

Two from near where I live:

Cuckoo Line between Mark Cross & Mayfield. Now the widened A267 road.

Bexhill West Branch from Bexhill to Powdermill Stream - now the Hastings to Bexhill A2690 link road (even uses 2 old railways bridges in the cutting).

In my town. The old high level line from East Grinstead station along the line of the now A22. Local rumour has it that this was to be called "Beeching Cut" but it was renamed by the council as it was a too ironic name. Changed to "Beeching Way"

Most of the trackbed of the freight avoiding line at Coventry has been used by the new course of the A444.

I would consider the first two as plateways.

If you count colliery wagonways as railways, there are numerous examples In and around Tyneside. For example in Gosforth Regent Farm Road and Christon Road are on the line of the Coxlodge wagonway, as, a few miles further on, is the approach road to Wallsend Leisure Centre and Portugal Place, Wallsend.

There is a section of the Brockenhurst - Ringwood line between Wootton and Holmsley which is now a road.
When the M1 was extended south into London, one of the slip roads was built over the proposed trackbed of the Northern Heights extention (LUL)
Of the Redruth & Chasewater railway, the section from Point to Devoran became unofficially used as a road and achieved some notoriety when its status was challenged in court when the local council decided to repair the surface and make property owners adjoining it partly responsible for the costs. It is now officially a road.
What about station sites which are now housing estates, such as Bude or Halwill. Ringwood station has also been cleared for road improvements.
Part of the Rngwood to Christchurch line is now the A338

Not that much around London

A tiny example in London is what was the curve between the Beckenham Junction to Crystal Palace line and the London Bridge to Croydon line just north of Norwood Junction.

It's now mostly a cul-de-sac called Camille Close, where coincidentally many years ago I viewed a house that backed onto the remaining line pretty much exactly where it would have diverged.

The A55 through Colwyn Bay is partially on the original route of the railway, which was moved slightly to the north.

The A66 just to the west of Penrith is on the old line to Keswick, one of the hindrances of a reopening to Keswick.

Further west the A66 is also on the trackbed of the Keswick - Cockermouth - Workington section of line along Bassenthwaite Lake and in the Cockermouth area.
