I distinctly remember travelling behind a class 47 out of Paddington during thea afternoon in about 2001. The services were to Exeter I think (I only went as far as Reading). When did these cease? Where was the extra HST stock found from to allow the removal of the 47s?

Round about 2003? or something like that, I believe they were replaced by Adelantes, and later off lease HSTs from VXC and MML

Of course. I'd forgotten that the 180s were introduced around then.

Would this be the working regularly powered by 57601 in Porterbrook colours? Here's a bold reminder (not my pic):

There was a farewell special for the FGW 47/8s from Paddington to Penzance and back on 11/12/2004.

The 47s definitely continued past Exeter - got a record of one down the sea wall at Dawlish although this would have been in the summer so possibly just summer extensions to Paignton?

In terms of 57601, my earliest (and potentially only?) haulage to date was on a Bristol - Pad between Bristol - Bath sometime in the early 2000s

I remember travelling on a 47-hauled service from Penzance to Westbury in the summer of 2001, so I'm assuming they occasionally went into Cornwall.

I travelled from Reading to Penzance in September 2000 behind a class 47 (I might not have noticed if it had been a 57, but Wikpedia indicates that they hadn't yet been introduced on GW at that point so it must have been a 47). The train included one or two Motorail vans at the front, and I think it ran every summer Saturday. It was a morning departure, though (maybe about 10.30 from Paddington?), whereas the OP mentions leaving in the afternoon.

It was still running in summer 2002 -- I remember seeing it preparing to leave Paddington. For what it's worth (it doesn't cite a source), the Wikipedia article on class 57s says 'It [57601] hauled Mark 2 stock on day services from London Paddington to Plymouth and Penzance—until these ceased in September 2002...'.
