Time to turn of the news (and internet!) for a few days.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-48178229

The Duchess of Sussex has given birth to a boy, the Duke of Sussex has announced.

Prince Harry said they were "absolutely thrilled" and thanked the public for their support during the pregnancy.

He said Meghan and the baby were doing "incredibly well", adding that they were still thinking about names for the infant, who was delivered at 05:26 BST.

Buckingham Palace said the baby weighed 7lbs 3oz (3.2kg), and that the duke was present for the birth.

It added: "The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Lady Jane Fellowes, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Earl Spencer have been informed and are delighted with the news.

"The duchess's mother, Doria Ragland, who is overjoyed by the arrival of her first grandchild, is with their Royal Highnesses at Frogmore Cottage."

I'm glad mother and baby are healthy but otherwise I'm not that bothered.

First official engagement already pencilled in for when he turns 18; the opening of the central London section of what may be by then known as the William Line. Not including Bond Street station of course, that suggestion would be ludicrous.

On it's Facebook page, it did.

My own personal feelings:
I'm not a Royalist, but I don't object to their existence.
I think we should only be paying for the immediate line to the throne through the civil list (Monarch plus the next 4 in line only, so, Queenie, Charlie (m), Willie, Georgie and Charlie (f))
The rest can go out and get jobs, I'm sure my 4 step children could not just do f-all and be paid millions per year by the state, regardless of their status

Once the Queen has departed from the world the Royals days are numbered as taxpayer funded outfit. The Queen has earned a special place in the nations hearts from her neutrality to her careful use of public funds. Her children and grandchildren all waste taxpayers money like crazy. I read that Markle wanted upgraded everything at their "cottage" hiking the bill for the taxpayer by millions. Middleton spent untold millions on her place at a massive cost to the taxpayer.

Agreed, don't have anything against Liz (well I'm sure I could find something but doesn't that apply to anyone?) but have to say Charlie as King is a prospect I dread. Incidentally how come the royals, unelected and unaccountable get to waste tax payer's money but a democratically elected MP required for the functioning of a free and democratic society claims for a bath plug and there's outrage?

The Civil List was abolished in 2012, the "firm" is now funded from a percentage of the Crown Estate income. Brian and family are funded from the income of Duchy of Cornwall.

The word another is somewhat depressing. New royal baby would have been nicer. I mean it is Harry's first one.

No longer here
The sourness of some people’s reaction to news of a newborn baby is sad. Sure, I don’t appreciate the wall to wall coverage of royals, but it’s a new baby.

Good luck to them.

Seems like everyone's having kids, I'm starting to see babies appear in my school mates Facebook photos and it's making me feel old

Why do you dread Charles being king? It's a ceremonial role as head of state and will have zero impact on your life, my life or anyone else's.

I don't like the idea of a royal family on principle, but I'm not sure the alternatives (such as an elected president with limited constitutional powers, as several other countries have) would be much of an improvement. Sometimes it's better the devil you know...

In its current form it's a ceremonial role and one the present monarch has respected, however given Charlie's reputation for meddling in what should be the affairs of the Democratic process I'm not sure this would continue effectively under him.

I think saying that Charles has meddled in the democratic process is an exaggeration.

Maybe not in the process itself, I agree I chose my words poorly, but he has shewn scant regard for being above politics in public and with his letters to officials.

As Prince of Wales he's entitled to comment on public life and on government policy.

Once he's King, protocol dictates that he stays neutral and withholds comment on political matters.

Exactly - and Charles himself stated very clearly only a few months ago that he recognises the distinction and would follow it.

How is it possible that the birth of Archie cost nearly 1 million euro. How that makes confidence in the NHS i do not know.

I appreciate English isn't your first language, but I cannot work out what that means.

@Groningen I don't understand what you are saying either. Are you referring to some news article or something? If so, we do ask that you provide a link and quote.

I think the source is that mine of useful and accurate information, The Sun:

https://www.thesun.co.uk/fabulous/9033848/meghan-markles-pregnancy-cost-revealed-royal-baby/

MEGHAN Markle's pregnancy is estimated to have cost a staggering £800,000 - equalling just over $1million, The Sun Online can reveal.

The Duchess of Sussex's glam maternity wardrobe and reported £15,000-a-night private hospital birth all added to the staggering sum

So anyone who really wants to know can read all about it!
