I do think it's time these trains are refurbished. The seat covers look fairly worn inside and these trains were last refreshed in 2003-2005. Does anyone agree with me?

I believe that the last refresh of the turbo fleet was carried out sometime around 2010 as mentioned in the Marlow - Maidenhead Passengers' Association, however with that being said the interiors of the turbos do look in a noticeably worse condition than the recently refurbished sprinters. I would love to see them refurbished and imagine that GWR plan to do this in the near future, given they've already refreshed some of the turbos. I would personally like to see the 3+2 seating replaced with 2+2 seating when they inevitably receive their next refurbishment, but as I understand it the DfT isn't keen on this.

Hasn't some work been done on the two car units already?

Very true, some modifications like the ones you mention have already been made to the Class 165 fleet as highlighted in another thread, however something a bit more substantial certainly wouldn't go amiss.

The 165s, the 2 car ones around Bristol at least, are in much better condition than the 166s for the most part. The interiors are much brighter and fresher.

Even the XC train interiors look far more cleaner and are worthy of a thumbs up than the GWR 165's and all the 166's except 166205! The XC fleet obviously being the Voyagers, HST's and Turbostars :).

Have you seen 166205 recently? The grey flat cloth looks far more stained and dirty after a comparatively short period than the navy moquette on the rest of the fleet.

On YouTube / maybe the odd glimpse when at Bristol Temple Meads back in February or maybe a few times before that I've seen 166205. I'm not surprised the interior would have got dirty - it was refurbished nearly 4 years ago for the GWR brand launch after all :)!

Probably doesn't help that some folk don't know how to sit properly with feet on the floor and the seats getting marked with whatever crap is on the bottom of their shoes.

(Sorry, but I'm now prefer all suburban stock to do away with bays and only have airline seating)

I have only travelled on a few of the 165s at Bristol and they have on the whole been bright and in fair condition. The 166s on the other hand are in serious need of being refurbished.

Strange, I’d have said while the 166s are decent enough, it’s the 165s that are really looking grotty these days!

the state of some emus as they come towards end of a lease is disgusting, the TOC should have some pride in the units they use, if that means a seat squab cover change, A hand bash of the exterior and full steam clean of interior then so be it. the unit should be returned to the rosco in a good interior and exterior condition...

It's generally regarded that 205's refurbishment was unsuccessful, and no more have been attempted. FGW/GWR's record on unit alterations is very poor, with passenger information such as first class identification (inside and out) and general signage being applied apparently randomly and wrongly.

Wow, the 165s were refurbished before the 166s back in 2010, and when they were in Reading, the 166s were the pride of the fleet.
It did bring a smile to my face when a 166 turned up on a stopper instead of a 165.

Not on a hot day... When they transformed into mobile ovens!

I don't think the interior repaint from 2010-2012 has aged well at all. Surprised the moquette covers haven't been swapped out for a GWR fabric as part of 'routine maintenance', IIRC another TOC did that with a moquette design that wasn't satisfactory. Also surprised that the plain blue units haven't received green GWR vinyls like the white body coloured IETs.

Went in a 166 yesterday Green Livery,Green Carpet and Blue Seats.I think Bristol Area Trains deserve new stock instead of cascades from other areas.I dont know whether the Castle HSTs will be ideal at busy times as there are not enough doors
and these services carry a high number of cycles which will be clogging up the vestibules.

I’ve noticed this too. It seems some 158 hybrids have up to 6 bicycle spaces. If I am correct, the 166s have space for 2 and on my morning commute I regularly see cycles pushed into the gangways or blocking doors.

I was on a two car 165 on a late evening service out of Paddington recently. It was a fast as well, first stop Slough, second Maidenhead. It presumably had some recent work done on it, as it had sockets and USB ports even in the airline seats.

When the Turbos were refreshed in January 2010, the seats were 're-trimmed'. What does that mean?
Across different parts of the transport industry retrimming and reupholstering are used interchangeably as far as I can make out. If you had a car retrimmed it would most probably include all the linings as well as the seats. There’s a firm in Eastleigh that does bus seating overhauls which is known as “Hants and Dorset Trim”.

In rail terms I doubt there’s a significant difference between the terms either...

The priority seat by the new luggage rack on the 165s has unbelievably restricted legroom

How many have had this refurbishment?

I'll take back my points on the GWR Class 165's - I've twice sat in one of the priority seats near the disabled toilet and the area looked clean.

That sounds about right.

Well, let’s see if the DfT finally agree to a Turbo refresh in DA3, at the third time of asking.

The last two times they said they didn’t need it, despite protestations to the contrary. It will be hard for them to refuse this time, given their current state.

I think they would allow 2+2, we have to remember that last refurbishment they were still used on the thames valley stopper services. I think the 166s atleast should be fitted with either the first class seats in 166205 or the standard seats in GWR HSTs.

The 2+2 seating would be good. Hopefully feel less cramped.

They won’t allow 2+2 - they are still obsessed about peak seat numbers, even in Bristol.
