Hi,

I bought my advance tickets via Paypal (Virgin).

Can I just put any debit/credit card in my name in to collect? I'm going from Sandwell this Saturday.

Yes, it can be any card at all that works the reader. Doesn't even have to be in your name.

PayPal doesn't share payment details with the merchant, so there would be nothing for Virgin to lock to tickets to, but even if you paid Virgin directly (which is probably better in terms of consumer rights and protections - PayPal is a bit shady IMO), their policy is to set all bookings (well, at least for me!) as any-card-collection anyway.

Indeed, any card can of course be used.

Yes, Virgin set my bookings to any card too. Though it may not be the case for anyone who has only recently signed up and/or who doesn't have many bookings.

LNER always set their bookings to same card collection, which is a pain, though you can get around that by using vouchers.

Some retailers are happy to set bookings to any card collection if you contact them, and so can ticket offices. My local ticket office can be fussy with ID, but a text or email to a helpful forum member in a ticket office can resolve it for me :)

Interesting what you say about Paypal being shady. I prefer to use it wherever available as it minimises the card details being spread across the internet (this may be a minimal risk with Virgin however one cannot be too careful these days).

How would the consumer rights and protections be affected? The ticket is still covered by the standard Virgin t's & c's anyway isn't it? Not sure how payment method would affect it (if it makes any odds, the Paypal draws directly from my debit card rather than having a balance).

No section 75 protection for purchases over £100 paid for with a credit card through PayPal, for instance.

Interesting. As I paid £21 for the return and it's via a debit card I don't think I'll worry too much. Besides, the charter thing supersedes S75 anyway surely?

Indeed. Admittedly I wasn't referring to your specific purchase, just a general comment about when it's sometimes not ideal to use PayPal.

On the other hand, it is sometimes a useful way to pay for something with Amex if it wouldn't normally be accepted.

Agreed. You have to trade off the benefits of having additional payment methods available vs the restriction of rights. It makes it a lot harder to conduct a chargeback, for instance - since when you give your card details to PayPal you are effectively buying electronic money off them, that they then agree to pay to the merchant. You can't dispute that they provided the electronic money to the merchant, so you are then limited to PayPal's own rubbish disputes system if there is an issue.

As to fraud, whilst it does happen, if you use a credit card online (as you always should!), if people commit fraud then at the end of the day it is not you who has been defrauded, and neither is it your money at stake. Better to be pursued for a dodgy debt than to have to do the pursuing yourself.
