Rhos was one of the centres of the Welsh Religious Revival of 1904-1905, along with (amongst others) New Quay in Ceredigion.

The poet Dylan Thomas lived in New Quay for a few months in 1944/45. Born in Swansea, he died in New York but is buried in Laugharne.

Frosterley Marble is a black limestone containing fossil corals of the Carboniferous Period, some 325 million years ago. When cut and polished the result is a beautiful ornate stone, much desired for church decoration, particularly during the Middle Ages. It has been taken from the Rogerley Quarry for more than 700 years; the decorative columns found in Durham Cathedral date from about 1350.

Hexham church was burned and the town sacked by Halfdan Ragnarsson in 875. The Danish army got as far south as Berkshire, but was defeated by Alfred son of Aethelwulf (later Alfred the Great) at the Battle of Ashdown, thought to have been fought near East Ilsley.

The parish church at Chedworth is of twelfth century Norman origin, but was much rebuilt in the second half of the 15th century in the Perpendicular Gothic style. The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, Coleshill, Warwickshire is another Church built in the same style.
