Can't imagine a 710 would be of much use for gauging purposes when they can wait a few months for a unit that will be of the same dimensions (720).
Maybe they will be cleared all the way to Fenchurch Street for operational purposes. They will no doubt be going to Bombardier's workshop at Ilford from time to time. Maybe it's easier to send them from Barking to Fenchurch St, then up the Bow Curve and onto the Electric Lines up to Ilford Depot.

The tweet being referred said it was there for ‘electrical testing’, nothing at all about gauging.
720s are 23m coaches, aren't they. with 710s 20m?

I'm no expert on the English language but....
Also, while I've not been able to find confirmation, it seems likely that a 10-car Class 711 (c2c's Aventra order) will be equivalent to a 12-car Class 357 or Class 387 formation of 20m vehicles. Therefore Class 711 is indeed probably 23m or 24m per vehicle.
Electrical testing makes sense - the coach length probably doesn't require any change in electronics, and after all the issues on the East Coast with the IET's, it would make sense to find issues as soon as possible

What part of this tweet ...
that was mentioned up thread says anything about gauging? Speculation in the replies suggests it but the driver said nothing of the sort.

The second tweet saying it's an electrical test is from the same person. I'm no Sherlock Holmes but seems like the first tweet was his guess (gauging test) - hence the question mark, and the second tweet about five minutes later was him correctly that assumption after catching the driver and asking what was going on.

The "first LO train" bit is incorrect so I wouldn't put any value on the persons other comments!! Electrical testing usually gets special protection and not on a live railway anyhow.

Useful for getting feed back for Anglia and C2C Aventras that there aren't any major issues like there were at Barking
Interesting remark re the 710s and 378s. Would Cl 710 passenger service within weeks be a reasonable guess? Must admit I hadn't expected the 378s to vanish too quickly unless Bombardier and Arriva are very confident about reliability given passengers haven't been let loose on a 710 yet.

Since I hate travelling sideways I'm not likely to use Goblin anymore, same for the West Anglia inner suburbans when their units are replaced.
The 172's were too short, but at least they were reasonably comfortable. As for the temporary 4-car variant, weren't the 710's originally 4-cars?
If you mean the 378s then the earliest ones were delivered as 3 car units. They were then extended to 4 cars and a later batch came as 4 cars. There was then a larger project to extend all of them to 5 cars - this entailed platform works at a number of locations.

710262 on 5Q50 at Harringay Green Lanes at lunchtime. 37601 passed the other way just minutes before, rather ahead of shadowing it!

Which is exactly what I said.
Just to add a bit about train testing on the GOBLIN. We now have the long standing up to 4 return trips from Willesden to Barking (often with rescue loco). Last week a couple of peak time runs were added with some reversals at Bkg P1 and the Gospel Oak bay. Today an extra train was added in the morning off peak doing Willesden to Barking then shuttling up and down on the line and then back to Willesden early afternoon. Assuming the trains are all different then that makes 3 units going back and forth.

Current plan is to start a limited passenger service towards the end of next week (subject to clearances being received). These will be in addition to the half hourly 378s currently running.

Hoorah! I when the 710s are fully operating the line I imagine the Goblin 378s will need a bit of TLC as well as their 5th carriage back!

Are these still going to operate on the Watford Junction line because I've read in Today's Railways that there is some problem and they may not end up on that service.
