I used them for some Spanish tickets about 4 years ago with no problems. Since then the French and Italian sites have been good enough to book directly with.
I'm travelling from Ely to Frankfurt. I assumed that the Ely-London bit would be to London International CIV, so I would be covered if I missed the Eurostar because of a delay. However, it was to "London Terminals" instead. I would have been better to book the Ely-London bit from a ticket office or with Raileasy. I've just arrived in Kings Cross on time, so its not a problem this time

Chiltern are back up to 5% cashback with Quidco (for now).
However, their website has become extremely flaky - beyond it's general slowness. I've had numerous error messages at various stages in the booking process, saying there's a problem with the site or with my card, then taking me back to the start of the booking process.
A couple of purchase attempts resulted in card payment being taken, but no booking visible on the site and no email or booking reference receieved, meaning I had to chase it up with their web support team for refund. I only discovered this issue when checking my bank account.

I have had the same issues with Chiltern regarding taking payment without giving me anything for it!

I don't think it's malicious in this case - it's purely incompetent web design. But even if it were malicious, you are correct that there is, for all intents and purposes, no consumer regulator for the rail industry. The ORR doesn't seem to give a damn - all they care about is NR contracts and suchlike legalities.

I didn't mean it was malicious - I was wondering if there was a regulator for remote payments generally (as it's more of a payment systems issue than a rail industry one), in case this or similar problems happened more than occasionally and some people never found out.

I used them alot recently with the 3.5-5% cashback, it is slow, but only once did I have any payment issue. It said the payment failed, then the collection code arrived by email, so I checked my credit card and it had a pending transaction, so I didn't retry. The payment completed on the credit card and was able to collect the tickets.
It handy getting 5% cashback on weekly seasons (not on chilterns lines).
Expedia did the same to me once, said card had failed, so I paid with a different card, and then found they had charged on both cards, they refused to refund even after I sent them scans of my statements, when I then attempted a chargeback, they offered a refund as goodwill gesture. I felt no goodwill on my part and they are now on my list of companies never ever ever to use again.

Not a special offer per se, but it is a very good offer nonetheless, so that's why I'm posting it:
West Coast Railway Company are offering £30 Adult £20 child fares steam-hauled doing Lancaster-Carlisle return on their Santa Specials in November and December this year. Although obviously aimed at the family market, I believe that to be a bargain for mainline steam.

At least it's better than the old "20% off selected routes with no railcard discounts allowed" deal they did a couple years ago.

Just been to the ticket office at Lancaster station to get a northern weekend rover, I handed over the printed off form with the tokens on it to be told “ Are they doing these again I hate them!”. He fiddled about on his machine for a minute and then said he couldn’t sell me one as there was no price for it. I told him it was £17:50 but he wasn’t interested and told me that there was problems last time with the northern offer.

I've bought them at Huddersfield no problem. The ticket office staff find it straight away on the screen type thingy. Think he meant he couldn't be arsed looking for it.
Even Sheffield can issue these without any problem at all. Sounds like a "Virgin experience".
I've bought these tickets from Virgin ticket offices at Carlisle, Preston and Crewe with no problems.

I always buy mine on the train from Bamber Bridge to Preston. Just ask the guard for a 'Northern Only Day Ranger'. I've only had one have trouble finding it in their menu. It's on their machines. It saves the hassle of the queue at the ticket office in Preston. Although I've not tried a weekend one, just the day rangers. Perhaps you just need to ask them to search 'Northern Only Weekend Ranger'?

Thanks for your replies. I’ve contacted Northern who have assured me that Lancaster should be able to sell me the ticket I wanted. I’ve also contacted Virgin who are looking into the situation.

A discount that, for once, actually works with Railcards! ISTR they did a similar promotion about this time last year.

From what it looked like from the T&Cs that 40% discount from LNER is a one-off, and can't be used with railcard discounts.
Also for holders of NUS cards, it's 10% off XC & 25% off Grand Central, both I believe can be used alongside a railcard.
