Hi all,

Newbie here so please bare with me.

I have injured my foot so in a cast. I need to change tubes at Bank to get onto the DLR. Can anyone here who has done the journey advise if there are any steps to climb or is there a lift that I can utilise. Just trying to avoid using stairs if at all possible.

thanks all!
Lisa

What line are you changing from?

DLR has step-free access from Street level as does the Waterloo & City line. The Waterloo & City is also connected to the DLR via a combination of escalators and a lift, but involves a long walk, or there is full step-free access via a walk at street level.

The Central line has access to the ticket hall via escalators from platform level, and there are then two steps at ticket hall level following which you pass through the gateline and walk to the Northern line ticket hall and catch lifts down to a lower concourse, from which there is a lift to the DLR.

From the Northern line the only way out involves either 21 steps up to a lower concourse and then straight down in a lift, or over 60 steps down to the DLR platform, or a long walk via escalators and then 28 steps up to either District line platform.

From the Westbound District line platform there is access to the DLR via two escalators and a long walk, but no steps. From the Eastbound District line platform you will have to take a number of steps both up and down via a convoluted route or go via 15 steps to ticket hall level and then some more steps to street level, and take a long walk at street level to the DLR lift.

Worth noting that the Northern Line lifts, being no use for PRM as there are steps either side of them, are out of use in the peaks as they can't cope with passenger volumes.

This is not true. They are open for customers who need it at any time as it is the only way to access the DLR for persons of restricted mobility. The Northern line ticket hall is served by a lift from King William Street.

I would echo what @Mojo said, and ask what your whole journey is.

Even when not restricted by a leg cast, there is almost always a more pleasant route than changing at Bank! :)

Thanks everyone. Sorry I forgot to mention the complete journey.

So I need to get from Euston to Woolwich Arsenal. On the TFL website its showing as Northern Line from Euston, change at Bank, onto the DLR to Woolwich Arsenal. But obviously trying to do it avoiding as much walking as possible!

You might find it easier to take the Hammersmith and City from Euston Square and change at West Ham instead. While you do have to walk to Euston Square, there's less walking (above ground) than to the Northern Line (below ground). If you'd want lifts at every change point, you could bus it to Kings Cross from Euston. (Euston Square only has a lift to the westbound platform).

Euston to London Bridge on the Northern Line, then SouthEastern to Woolwich Arsenal?

Yes that would be my recommended route. If Escalators are no good, then the OP could walk or catch a bus to Kings + which has lifts to the Northern line. There’s also the option of changing onto the Jubilee line and then onto the DLR.

Or a direct train from St Pancras to Woolwich Arsenal (St Pancras is just up the road from Euston). I tend not to use the TfL journey planner to plan routes - it doesn't very often produce the best results

Yes, the TfL planner is surprisingly unhelpful. Typing STP to Woolwich Arsenal now on the TfL and NR planners, the TfL route (Northern line then DLR) takes 39 minutes, when the direct Thameslink train on the NR planner takes 38 yet doesn't appear on the TfL planner at all. Removing the tube and DLR options it finally appears, yet also includes a NINE minute walk to get to St Pancras International :s

I've never seen this confirmed, but there's a strong suspicion that the TfL route planner will try to keep you on TfL services for revenue reasons.

It might not be intentional. It might just be subconscious bias by the people that program it
