Hello,

I am travelling by train from Cleethorpes to Heysham Port to go to the Isle of Man as part of my 18th Birthday Present in March. I want to know what sort of route is the most likely to be the one I will take. I am going on 20 July 2019 from Cleethorpes.

Thanks.

Journey planner will send you via piccadilly. But Donny/Leeds might give you the pleasure of a pacer on the bentham line...

Yes. 1 a day to connect with the ferry. Arrives about 13.15. Ferry leaves at 14.15**

** I haven't actually checked the ferry times. But they've departed at 14.15 for the last 20 years, so I'd be surprised if its changed.

Is there a direct train from Leeds to Heysham Port at all?

No longer direct from Leeds requires a change at Lancaster. The Heysham service on that date in July will be the 12:49 starting from Lancaster arriving Heysham at 13:17. The Leeds service arrives Lancaster at 12:10 continuing to Morecambe where it terminates at 12:24 (this is the 10:18 from Leeds)

I will probably end up taking a Manchester Airport service (from Cleethorpes) and running to Piccadilly then change for a TPE service towards Lancaster then change from there to Heysham Port Service. (I Know I have to leave early in the morning)

I'd strongly recomend via Leeds and Skipton if this is a rail adventure and back via Preston and Blackburn.

Going via Manchester you need to leave Cleethorpes at 0726 or 0826, croos from P10 to P14 at Piccadilly and then get the 1047 Barrow or 1126 Glasgow TP train to Lancaster arriving at 1202 or 1220. The Heysham train departs LAN at 1249.

I can really recommend the scenic views on the leeds to heysham route, but as another post suggests, do a circular with out one way, back the other

When I saw this comment I thought “no way there has been a direct Leeds to Heysham boat train as long as I can remember and that’s quite a long time” but of course you are correct. That passed me by and I’m guessing only changed in the new timetable.

I’m so glad I took the train a couple of years ago, I didn’t want the ferry just the journey, as others have said a beautiful run often eclipsed by the Settle & Carlisle line.

As far as I recall it was only in the December 2018 timetable change where the direct Leeds-Heysham became a Leeds-Morecambe with the Heysham service commencing in Lancaster.

It was May 2018 when the changes occurred

Certainly does! The change appeared to be so the unit could get back to Leeds to strengthen a Sheffield service for the afternoon peak
It was (also?) connected with the service enhancements on the line - which means that the eastbound Heysham-Leeds connection involves a long wait in Morecambe or Lancaster. The OP might therefore want to return by another route of his choice!
