Afternoon. I am currently at the point where I am spending a few hours a day looking what on earth I want to do with my life. I have decided that, for me, the best path to go down is the railway one.

I want to eventually become a Train Manager, and I have since I was seven (I remember having my own whistle and pretending to dispatch trains ) but I am not sure of where to start.

I am at sixth form and in the GWR land, so I have looked at apprenticeships. What is the best route to go to A. Be worthwhile and B. Get me to one day become a Guard.

Thanks

Route 1 would be to sign up for job alerts on there website and apply for any job to get you within company ranks (train presentation, onboard host, station staff, etc) and then wait for a train manager role to come up

Route 2 would be sign up for job alerts and wait for a train manager role to come up and apply, however route 1 would be better as it would give you some experience that could put you in front a little bit of a role which does attract a lot of applicants

Agreed, however route 2 might require a wait as there’s a minimum age I believe?

Get some work experience so when it comes to filling in the work experience section of the application form you can actually fill it in. Doesn't have to be railway based or even paid, just something to give yourself a bit of life experience. At the TOC where I work they like even the drivers to be customer focused now, so even if its working in a charity shop it would be something. Always thought leading at somewhere like the scouts or St Johns Ambulance might look good too, always thought they'd be handing for the dealing with an emergency and following rules questions.

That sort of thing always looks good on a CV (volunteering in general does, but even more so if it’s in something such as First Aid). I’m a Community First Responder for the Ambulance Service and it’s helped me both in terms of my CV and at interviews.
