STAGECOACH PLANS £80MILLION NEW VEHICLE ORDERS TO DELIVER BETTER MOBILITY AND AIR QUALITY
20 May 2019

More than 350 new buses and coaches ordered across UK
Planned orders include 48 electric buses for Manchester and South Wales
Mix of local buses with latest Euro 6 emissions standards and state-of-the-art coaches due for delivery this year
Local authorities urged to match private sector investment with measures to tackle road congestion.
Stagecoach Group today (20 May 2019) announced planned new vehicle orders worth more than £80million to help tackle the twin challenges of car congestion and air quality.

A new fleet of 351 cleaner, greener vehicles, will be introduced in the coming 2019-20 financial year as the company invests further in to improve services for customers in communities across the UK.

The brand new buses and coaches will be introduced in Stagecoach's regional networks in England, Scotland and Wales, as well as on the company’s megabus.com network in the UK.

The planned orders include 48 electric buses which are being part-funded by the UK Government’s Green Bus Fund and – once orders are finalised – will go into service in Manchester and South Wales.

Virtually all of the new vehicles meet the Government’s Low Carbon Emission Bus specification, with a mixture of electric vehicle technology and the latest Euro 6 emissions standard engines.

Most of the new vehicles are set to be built in the UK, helping to support hundreds of British manufacturing jobs and smaller businesses in the supply chain.

Around three quarters of the new vehicles will be fitted with audio visual display systems which provide next-stop information. Each of the new vehicles will also be fitted with CCTV, and USB charging points, while most will also have wi-fi installed, giving customers free internet access during their journeys. The new vehicles are expected to go into service this year.

The latest investment includes 131 low-floor double-decker vehicles to go into service across the UK, as well as around 95 single deck vehicles and 28 midibuses.

Also included are a fleet of 12 new double deck vehicles for the Cambridge Guided Busway, delivering more capacity than ever before, carrying 100 passengers. There are also 22 coaches for the Group’s UK Bus, Scottish Citylink and megabus.com operations.

Stagecoach Group Chief Executive Martin Griffiths said: “This is a huge investment by the private sector in providing better mobility and better air quality in local communities. It follows other significant investment that we’ve made in smart ticketing, improved information for customers and digital technology.

“Delivering better bus services is a shared responsibility and it is absolutely essential that this commitment is matched by urgent action by local authorities to address the growing gridlock in our towns and cities. Without action on congestion, local people will not enjoy the full benefits of this investment and people’s quality of life, health and our economy will continue to be damaged by too many cars on the road.”

Details of the new orders are as follows:

131 ADL MMC Enviro400 double-deckers
95 ADL MMC Enviro200 single-deckers
28 ADL MMC Enviro200 midibuses
12 ADL MMC Enviro400 XLB Volvo B8L double deckers
32 ADL MMC City Enviro400 BYD Electric Bus double deckers
12 Optare Metrocity Electric Bus single deckers
4 Optare Solo Electric Bus mini-buses
14 Plaxton Panorama Volvo B11Rle double deck coaches
8 Caetano Levante Volvo B11R coaches
12 MCV Volco B8RLE single deckers
3 Optare Solo mini-buses
In the most recent Bus Passenger Satisfaction Survey carried out by independent watchdog Transport Focus reported that 90% of Stagecoach customers in England, and 92% of Stagecoach customers in Scotland, were satisfied with their journey.

Not necessarily - this ties in with what Cymru are expecting for their Traws Cymru work from Merthyr/Brecon. The three Solos may also be heading in that direction for the Brecon - Abergavenny route which is being upgraded to Traws Cymru Connect status.

131 ADL MMC Enviro400 double-deckers
  • 11161-75 (Macduff) could be 25 of this year's order (may be an extension).
  • 11176-91 (Aberhill) could be 16 of this year's order (may be an extension).
  • 10 for Hull due summer?
95 ADL MMC Enviro200 single-deckers
  • 21 for Hull due summer?
  • ? for Stockton (36/37/38) due late summer?
28 ADL MMC Enviro200 midibuses
  • 37482-500/601 (Kilmarnock) could potentially be 20 of these if they are this year's order.
12 ADL MMC Enviro400 XLB Volvo B8L double deckers
  • Confirmed in the article for the Busway.
32 ADL MMC City Enviro400 BYD Electric Bus double deckers
  • Confirmed for Manchester with the ULEV bus funding.
12 Optare Metrocity Electric Bus single deckers
  • Confirmed for Caerphilly with ULEV bus funding.
4 Optare Solo Electric Bus mini-buses
  • Confirmed for Caerphilly with ULEV bus funding.
14 Plaxton Panorama Volvo B11Rle double deck coaches
  • Article says the coaches are for 'the Group’s UK Bus, Scottish Citylink and megabus.com operations.' I'd assume that these will be split between Citylink and megabus, with the UK Bus coaches referring to the National Express coaches.
8 Caetano Levante Volvo B11R coaches
  • Already at Chesterfield for NatEx work.
12 MCV Volvo B8RLE single deckers
  • I'd assume these will be Busway services, if not then TrawsCymru as stated above.
3 Optare Solo mini-buses
  • TrawsCymru Connect potentially as said above?

I've done green for delivered vehicles and will do orange for confirmed vehicles.

I'm expecting at least 20 double deckers for Oxfordshire to replace some of the older Scanias but I've been saying it for the last few years so won't be holding my breath! Ideally a large batch for Witney with a few extra for Oxford, there hasn't been a day with a correct allocation for months (lots of single deckers on frequent routes that need double deckers as the double deckers have been covering for Gold vehicles, mainly Scanias I think).

A much larger order than last year, even if you take out the ULEV buses - 351 in total, 303 of these without funding, compared to around 200 last year (including the extension).
Steven Knight Media says that the full information will follow.

All very interesting - be good to get the detail on where these go to though the electrics seem to be Caerphilly and Manchester. How much in London will be dependent on future contract awards and I'd be intrigued to know if there are any Gold spec vehicles. There's already been some mutterings about the Gold concept and they've been moved out of Rhondda and Leamington.

The other interesting bit will be if they continue to allocate across their OpCos - mind you, I do agree with Arctic Troll that Newcastle really does need a bit of investment. I can accept why it hasn't in recent years but it is needing a bit of TLC up there.

Would be welcome - I thought that was already a TCC status service? You thinking dedicated vehicles, better vehicles, TC livery etc?

Local sources up there suggest that only Stockton will be getting buses. The people up there are usually pretty reliable, but they could be wrong.

Great news for those who need it (and annoying for those who don't need it)! I'm hoping it will be set up similarly to London's, as their format is very good with the LED sign in place of the Bus Stopping sign saying the stop on the top line and if the bus is stopping on the bottom line, but just a personal preference.

Hopefully scotland will get its fair share of new vehicles spread evenly throughout the country and ever new bus from now on should be low loading for disabled people as the stairs are to high for many that have mobility problems

315 ish Tridents left as per recent fleetlists - including Rennies but not Open Toppers
I suspect most of the 65 ish MAN/ALX300s and Kinetics could be wiped out, but depends whether Pointer Darts and older MAN/E300s (most re-engined recently but those not) and older shape E300s are to be replaced too.
Looks like we are seeing the final few years of the once provincial ALX400s and 300s :(

Based upon where has the most heritage traction, my predictions for the 400s and 200s are:
East Kent - lots of older Tridents and Darts at Herne Bay and Thanet
Swindon - could be either 200s or 400s with large numbers of both Tridents and Darts
Devon - Plymouth could be candidate with some Tridents and lots of Darts with competition with
Northampton - lots of Tridents there and not had any investment for quite a few years (X4 at Kettering though has)
North East - already mentioned and has the bulk of the remaining ALX300s

Surely it's more a question of cascades - I doubt the Swindon routes that have Darts could justify new e200mmcs? As an abstract example, Banbury depot received e200mmc for one of their routes in 2016, having received new e200 for the same route in 2012. Those 2012 e200s ended up in Newark (IIRC) - Banbury has still got 2004 Darts!

My money would be on Oxford getting a fair lump of the e400s (as their Gold S1/S2 fleet at Witney is 2009/10 vintage). Those would make good cascades into places like Devon or Northants.

Oxford could use around 20-30 E400s, with 20 for Witney and some to support Oxford as I believe that there are issues with Scanias there, which has led to some very unpredictable allocations over the last few months, with single deckers on routes that can be full and standing with double deckers at peak (although they tend to be on the 8 where there is spare capacity following Go Ahead putting double deckers on there in 2017), and I'd estimate around 20% of Gold services (7/S3/S5/S8/S9) are being operated regularly by standard Stagecoach vehicles, with around 50% of the S8/S9 allocation at any one time not being the vehicles meant for this route. The 2015 E400s are particularly bad for the long journeys, the 2016s are pretty nice and the charging is more reliable!
What could be ideal is 20 E400s for Witney and possibly 7 for all standard services, including the S8/S9 allowing them to run with 2016 and new E400s (if Gold is being removed), allowing for most of the S3/S7 to run with Gold MMCs and the S5 to use the S3 and spare Scanias which seem to be in better condition. It may not work out, as the S8/S9 supposedly had new buses in early 2017 but there only tend to be 2 or 3 of these on the route at a time recently. If Gold is being removed these would be the easiest routes to downgrade, and they are probably the worst in terms of allocations. On top of this, the S5's Scanias are reaching the 7-year threshold so would ideally be replaced, but the loadings don't seem to be as good as they used to be on there.

I'm afraid in North Scotland that will probably never happen as coaches are needed and the Panther LE just isn't a viable option, not to mention it's too large (in terms of physical size) for many routes. Most manage fine with normal coaches anyway, it's just the Interdecks that present issues.

Anyone know if the orders include London buses?
They have included them in the past, probably to 'look good'
At the moment the only vehicles known to be on order/outstanding for London are 7 more E400 (11075-11081) due end of May.
Not yet ordered, Route 323 from January 2020 has just been re-awarded with New Electric S/deck -PVR 4. Very likely ADL/BYD E200EV, but not confirmed.
Stagecoach London have lost a number of routes recently and are due to lose a few more, so requirement for new vehicles down, but they could be awarded new contracts anytime, so that could change.

Stagecoach seem to keep Tridents for @16 years, been a fair amount of cannibalising of older Tridents, including quite a few from London, my guess is they will keep many Tridents going, 04 reg onwards.

These were delivered on time but ended up in South Wales to replace the MAN E300s that were so unreliable .They went to Stockton when the 15 plate Scanias were delivered.

Incorrect - those were the ones that ended up in Lincoln and Hull. Stockton’s 25 examples delivered in 2014 were due for delivery from the end of August until late September. The first example did not land at Stockton until the first week of October - the intention had been to launch one at the Depot Open Day at the end of September that year (the 40th anniversary of the formation of Cleveland Transit), instead one of the Carlisle pair attended to show off what the new vehicles looked like.

Not sure Steve Knight has got this quite right. He has a total of 22 B8RLE in here - there is not a double deck bus option with this chassis so presumably 12 of these will be B8L
