+1. I'm not religious, so travel prayers until I heard it on Etihad confused me. Didn't know a prayer specially for travel existed anywhere before!
St Christopher, patron saint of travellers. I have one on a chain. Also St Jude, patron saint of lost causes. Ha ha. I'm not even religious. I just like the imagery.

What's the coffee like in BA SH?
Got an early morning flight out of LHR next Sunday, and was wondering whether it was worth it.
Is it proper coffee or Instant stuff?

Any interesting places within Europe that can be recommended except Paris, Berlin, Dublin, Belfast, Helsinki, Brussels, Stuttgart, Hamburg, Bourges, Tallinn, Chartres, Tours, Rheims please?

Am looking at Warsaw, Amsterdam but wondered if there was anywhere else by flight obviously that recommended - not interested in Switzerland as it's sooooo expensive!

Vienna, Salzburg, Prague?

Sort of proper coffee. I can't remember the brand but it's a cup with an integrated filter in the lid which they pour water into, you let it brew and drink through the filter. I didn't think it brewed a very strong or flavoursome cup but they are at least made with ground coffee, it's better than Kenco.

Don't forget it's buy on board, about £2.50 IIRC

Barcelona. Munich (not in September), Köln. Stockholm and Copenhagen too, but pricey.

Stockholm, Monte Carlo, Nice and Budapest are all good. I'd recommend Reykjavik too but that's even more expensive than Switzerland.

Gdansk and Sopot on the same trip. Also Tallinn and a side trip on a ferry to Helsinki.

Actually did Tallinn and Helsinki in reverse!

Appreciate the recommendations but Monto Carlo is out of my budget!

If you fancy something slightly further Istanbul is my go to city for a city break. The bit extra you spend getting there you make up for in cheap accommodation and food. My partner and I love it, and use it when wanting to meet up somewhere after work travel (usually a month or so at a time).

I've been working a bit in Morocco too recently and love it. Marrakesh and cities in the north like the blue city (chefchehoun or similar).

Amsterdam is not worth visiting this time of year. Way too many tourists in a small place.

Seconded, loved Munich, it's a very pretty city, and so is Copenhagen.

If you're going to Koeln, then Koblenz is worth a visit as well

Why ? Bus takes 10-15 mins

I was taking the redundant water. The trek from platform 1 to the bus stops at Liverpool South Parkway feels like a really long way, although of course it actually isn't. Still takes a few minutes to do though. The journey to the airport feels like less of a mission!

Switzerland is not cheap, agreed, but like everything it can be done for reasonable money. I did find it expensive myself, but the Bernina Express made it worth every penny.

Recommendations, let's see. Stockholm, Vienna, Tallinn (just seen you've done that), Belgium (the train trip from Liege to Luxembourg is well worth it), Maastricht is nice too. Alicante and Valencia were nice, the Algarve I did as a child in 1992 so I have no recent memory of it but I have fond memories. Vilnius is a day trip and no more than that in my eyes. Riga I didn't think much of, same for Oslo.

I could possibly recommend a perusal of my trip reports at techsworldfrenzy.wordpress.com for some more in-depth thoughts ;)

In October 2018 it was Java Republic, ground coffee but I didn't think much of it. I'd get coffee at Heathrow, go to Pret at T5 with a reusable mug and get a filter coffee for 99p. With a mug you also get 50p off. It may only be filter coffee, but for 49p you cannot really argue. It's better than the stuff BA do on board in my opinion, for sure, and you'll not only get (usually) excellent customer service but you'll help keep hard-working baristas in a job. I also recommend their hellfire bacon rolls, not cheap but oh so worth it!

While I'm no fan of latte (last time I tried one during a hunt for Chiltern winners in Solihull, my face screwed up something chronic!) I do still recommend the reusable mug thing. 50p is 50p, especially if you're like me and love coffee!

Re City breaks had an excellent long weekend in Luxembourg city, stayed in a very reasonable apartment near the station and prices and travel cost very cheap - from next year all public transport will be free but at present you can travel all day for eur4. Some easy day trips to the castles at Vianden and Clervaux by train and bus. If you have more time you can get quickly to Trier or Metz on a train, I didn't as I've been to both before. The city itself has had a fortune sent on it in recent years and has many attractions in itself. A highlight for me was a visit to the brilliant preserved railway on Sunday at Pétange,an easy 25 minute train ride from Luxembourg. It has a combination of Diesel railcar or steam on very steep gradients to the former mining area at Fond de Gras. There's plenty to see there including two great bars and Auberge, sheds etc then you can get a narrow gauge steam mining train up to the next level on another very steep gradient. There is then narrow gauge electric traction into the line with mine tours or further tours of a mining village & trips over the border to France on two electric narrow gauge branches. I'd rate it as one of the most fascinating rail systems I've been on in ages, friendly, cheap and well run.

A question about Manchester Airport. It was my understanding that terminal 1 will be demolished in a couple of years time, so why are they building what looks like a new multi story car park on what was the arrivals car park outside?

Also what has happened to the T2 and T1/T3 long stay car parks, they no longer seem to exist as a parking option.

We used official T2 long stay last summer. It was adjacent to the building site of the new T2 extension so I wouldn't be surprised if the area has now been taken over by new structures.

We are avoiding the place this year, the whole experience was a nightmare.
