Yeah I get the impression that goal posts have been moved somewhat since the DMI back in Sept. Just wait and see I guess.

In 2015/16 I went through a FL recruitment drive for trainee's, spent £800 travelling the country to complete the tests, sat the DMI then bingo they pulled the plug without any explanation whatsoever, I was unable to find out how the DMI even went.

I believe that at that time there were issues regarding freight and I imagine things have now moved on. What surprised me was how the picture flipped without any information being relayed to applicants. From my experience absolutely anything can and does happen throughout the recruitment process.

Wasn’t that around the time the bottom fell out of the coal hopper.....I mean market?

I believe so, as I say things are probably different now, it was how FL relayed, or didn't that surprised me. Perhaps they had bigger issues to occupy their time!!

Hello All
Been lurking for a while.
I applied to Freightliner for a trainee driver position (Whatley) and have today received an invitation to an assessment day.
Anyone else currently in the mix for this?

Yeah I have. I've sat all the tests and have an interview on Wednesday with Freightliner.
Best of luck!

Is anyone else beginning to wonder if maybe these jobs that we're all waiting patiently in the pool for, are never actually going to happen at all??? Or should I be less worried?!

I am worried, but I also highly doubt they would make us all go through what we did, for nothing. They must have some sort of plan in mind. I have a friend who waited a year in the pool for another company in the train driving industry.

Hope you're right. It's just the wording of the last letter that worries me.

They could have said "we are still finalising plans for future courses but anticipate them to continue over the next year or two"

But instead said something like "we have no news and are working out the future needs of the company' which has just put doubt in my mind now

Unfortunately unless your in an area where trainee drivers are required, I’d say you’ll have a bit of a wait. It appears the attention is on the mendip hills area and London ( and surrounding area ). I passed my tests in the may/ June intake last year... I still haven’t heard a single up date almost a year later!

You would of thought getting drivers would be the top priority for the Mendip contract considering it starts in November.
Not enough time to get new drivers trained now.
FL will be very short of drivers for this work and is highly unlikely they will be able to fulfill their contract obligations.

Exactly that mate! Considering they’re months away from the contract starting, I’d at least have thought they’d have trainees starting their driving hours by now? But seems very slow at the moment!!

With so many people in the pool already for other areas and a demand for the mendip contract, I am surprised they never asked if there was people willing to relocate to start training immediately.

I emailed them saying I was willing to relocate anywhere in the country if they could offer me a training place.

They emailed back saying I would have to relocate to an area of my choosing first, enter the talent pool for that area and then wait to see if I would be successful in getting onto a training course in that area when one becomes available.

When I had my DMI back in October last year (seems like years ago now!) I was told specifically that if placed in a pool, I shouldn’t be concerned as it’s not like a lot of other train companies, where you’re placed in a pool for potentially years awaiting possible vacancies. This is a pool just whilst courses are arranged and as such it won’t be a long wait.

I guess business needs change and as such this doesn’t seem to be the case now. Good luck to all those in the pools and going through the assessments, I hope it works out for you!

I think it’s quiet because most people will have already started on a course or gone elsewhere with another company.

Very "Q", I was contacted previously about a possible HH role based in Crewe but it never materialised. That said, I will be withdrawing from the FL Pool as I have been offered a Driver Role at WMT starting in July. Just awaiting the paperwork to come through this week. One less person in pool will help someone else to get closer.... Genuinely wish you all good luck and hope you all get offered soon!

This is getting boring now. Waiting for Birmingham since 28th September 2018 after giving up two holidays to attend both assessment centres. I’ve had two emails since, one asking for those certificates in January and the latest one saying no courses coming up anytime soon.

Have since found out Birmingham have taken on a load of ex tamper drivers to fill the vacancies faster as they are classed as 75% trained, and the mendip training is being done first. Also there is a severe lack of mentor drivers for training.

So much for the DMI where I got told if I make it into the pool I will be guaranteed a job very soon as Birmingham we’re desperate.

Not be long till our physcometrics start running out.
