Complete timetables remain important as they give you an indication of the overall service and the approximate hours of the day that the service is provided.

Whilst I broadly agree I must admit that RealTimeTrains with its filtering options is making even that use of timetables a thing of the past for me. It's very easy to fire up RTT put in an origin, insert a calling at for later in the journey and set it to cover the whole twenty four hour period. It's how I scan for service frequency and the times during which the service runs these days.

I admit that planning my forthcoming Freedom of the SW Rover journeys using RTT has been much easier than swapping between timetables and I's someone who would describe themselves as a timetable aficionado. Each to their own however and I can understand why others may prefer something printed.

There is no guarantee that these services would be extended every bank holiday.
Resources, crews, paths etc.
I think the idea where normal time table is printed then any amendments on station posters or social media is the best option.

Word of warning: it is extended because London Euston is closed all weekend. The train will be VERY busy.

Is Euston closed? I thought it was open this weekend.

Euston is OPEN this weekend. However it is a two track railway south of MK, so there is a reduced service and journey times extended.

The WCML is shut north of Gretna, though, so no through Anglo-Scottish services via Carlisle.

Trains to Edinburgh via Birmingham are on RTT at 0553 and 0811 on Saturday
There is a very limited VT service on Sunday with no VT departures before 0916, only 6 trains from Euston running North of Preston and nothing at all North of Lancaster

Guess EC to Scotland will be even busier than usual

I would not expect to see bank holiday changes noted in the standard printed timetable.

What next, a code above every service saying that it doesn’t run on the 25th and 26th December?

The printed version of the National Rail Timetable used to have a supplement at Christmas listing all the changes. Sometimes a whole table would be reprinted but the rest was just a list of services table by table which had changed in which case it was a right pain in the whatsit to decipher and work out what was running and when. Although I do like a printed table, thank god we have online journey planners these days.

The trains referred are STP trains rather than variations in Real Time trains which means the original train has been 'cancelled' and replaced with a new (STP) schedule. When East Coast ran hourly on weekdays to Edinburgh the Newcastle services were extended to / from Edinburgh on Bank Holiday Mondays as people didn't travel back on Sunday afternoons as they would on a normal weekend.

I don't know why. I had no trouble understanding the supplements.

Usually a whole Table was reprinted because there were so many changes, in this case, you just read the infomation in the reprinted Table (as the normal timetable didn't apply on the date (which was printed at the top of the page in the supplement)).

When there was only a few changes, there would be a list of notes, ( normally a later arrival time or joining cut short / extended).
