Are there many bus stations in the UK which are designed in a way whereby the pedestrian entrance is on a different level to the bus departure bays and passengers are required to use a lift, stairs or an escalator to access the bus departure bays?

Bradford Interchange is definatley split over two levels, I have previously used both the lifts and escalators in the shopping centre going to and from Broadmarsh Bus Station in Nottingham and I also seem to remember having to use an escalator to exit Edinburgh Coach Station.

Are there many other examples?

Is Middlesbrough? Buses seem to come down from the top on the Hillstreet Centre side, i've never really looked into it.

You'd love the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York. 223 gates (bus stops) over four levels, all accessed up or down from the ground floor.

Aylesbury is built into a slope and accessed from the shopping centre above but you can access at street level. The only fully segregated terminal where you had to access the bays from above, that I can think of, was the now demolished West London Air Terminal which, of course, had special access requirements.

Only coach departures are upstairs at Middlesbrough, the normal bus stands are level with the ones on the inside circuit, apart from a few on the ramps.

Cumbernauld- North & South are separate and on opposite sides of the main road, normal access is down various ramps/stairs from the shopping centre above

Plus direct access to the Lincoln Tunnel, so the majority of services (I think) never use a surface road in Manhattan.

Preston?

It’s all on the level, unless you are counting the access via the former subways

I don’t think Edinburgh counts either, there is only an escalator at one end because the bus station is slightly lower down than the road above.

The Pentagon bus station in Chatham, whose existence precipitated the use of large white fleet numbers on the roofs of Maidstone and District double deckers, which started a small trend.

Northampton ? - it's all on one level, with a separate part in another street. Preston is also on one level.

Northampton I thought you went up an escalator from the shopping centre.

And Preston via the subways...unless they've gone now?

To be fair Preston looks multi level .

I recall a multi level bus station Istanbul , massive

Only the coach stands are upstairs, where the coach lounge is, but buses have to go up and round to any of the outside stands.

The old Eldon Square had escalators down into the depths of hell.

Does Bradford Interchange count?

Yes. That's probably why it's the first one mentioned in this thread.

Whilst you can use steps to access Broadmarsh, it is possible to access it without steps or lifts if you come from the right direction.

Before it was demolished that is.

Could you say Exeter used to be on two levels, as the coach stands were lower.

The Galleries Bus Station in Washington is only accessible via stairs / escalators from upper walkways from the adjacent shopping area. There were no pavements at road level last time I was there. I was surprised that despite having been refurbished by Nexus (?) that the design has remained unchanged for decades.

You can get in and out at street level through the north end, not that there's anywhere worth walking to when you get out.

Other than the MetroCentre, I can't think of another bus station with no street level access at all. Even the horrible old Eldon Square had some level access from Percy Street.

The old Bradford Interchange didn't have level access from the street but the new one does at the top end.

Skelmersdale Concourse bus station is at the top of an escalator from the eponymous shopping centre. I've a vague memory of Hammersmith being similar but I don't entirely trust it!

Broadmarsh is no more. All gone.

Skelmersdale, has pedestrian access from the north side to/from the street as well, annoyingly bus accessing the bus station from the south side now have to circumnavigate the perimeter roads around to the north side, the south side ramp to Skem bus station used to be 2 way, it's now 1 way heading from the bus station.

Broad Marsh was accessed on the level; either through the doors from the shopping centre or the normally open side entrance; their were steps and escalators further distant but the pedestrian entrances to the bus station itself were definitely on the same level as bus departure bays
