Anyone know if the 7pm rule is still valid for passes bought in 2019 for travel in 2019? I know they are phasing it out but want to know if they’re still doing it? Cheers

From the 1st January 2019 our Night Train Rule has changed. Before this change we used the 7pm-rule, which means your train had to leave after 7pm and arrive after 4am. You had to write down the day of arrival.

Now, since 1 January 2019, you only write down the day of departure. For example, if you travel on a night train from 9 to 10 August, with the new rule you write down the day of departure, so 9 August.

On the day of departure of the night train, you can take as many trains as you want, it's on the same day after all. If you take another train after the night train has arrived at it's destination on the next day, you have to use a new travel day

This is what the official website says (https://www.interrail.eu/en/plan-your-trip/trains-europe/night-trains)

So I suppose if you don't want to use up another travel day after leaving the night train for a short transfer to your actual next destination, then it's worth buying an additional local fare for that leg. That's really just the opposite of doing the same before departure using the old rule, although that was easier because you were already in the locality.

Thanks for the help - yeah the journey on the other end would only be ~10€ so would be better just buying. Cheers

there is a dedicated IR-forum run by Peter&Flo from Austria, on rail.cc/en
It was explained in this and several other (german) fora, that in 2019 both rules could be applied-without the user being given penalty-fares. Officially-as being bound to rules of sale, passes sold in '18 would still have the old rule (as one can buy IR up to 364 days before expiry date), so this would bring much confusion. As to how all/each and every ticket-checking-official would be aware of this (or even if they have been made aware of it at all) is of course totally unclear. Plus it gives the well/known less scrupulous money-searchers among them yet another excuse for fining and the chance to get some T-money under the table. There have been some reports now about that. Also how they will even detect that someone fraudulently uses it both nights/that was after all a big sport to do on a real IR/mission/spend as many nights in a train as possible is also quite unclear. Though that travel report-journal should reveal this.

There is a whole discussion about it between Treinreiziger and Interrail. Some what confusing. Also why Rhaetische Bahn is not mentioned in the papers, but seems to be valid.

Still trying to find out if the 00:11 Sleeper from Naples to Sicily counts as the day before day after.

"On the day of departure of the night train, you can take as many trains as you want, it's on the same day after all. If you take another train after the night train has arrived at it's destination on the next day, you have to use a new travel day".
Anyone know if this refers to the departure day OF THE TRAIN from start to destination - or your leg of the journey - I am not clear. It gets INTO Naples just before midnight.

We are in Naples for a couple of days beforehand and ideally would date the day before with this being the last journey of THAT day....

IF it doesn’t count could you always go back to the previous stop of the sleeper and board there

That'll be the day after surely, as it talks about day of departure, and the day of arrival is the same as the departure date
