Kenneth Grahame started to write Wind in the Willows while staying in Falmouth. There is a section dedicated to the book at the River and Rowing Museum in Henley on Thames.

The River Lemon flows through Newton Abbot, joining the Teign just below the town. It rises on Haytor and runs through Bickington .

Swindon is probably derived from Old English words meaning "pigs' hill" . Toller Porcorum seems also to have pig associations.

Lechlade is claimed to be the highest point at which the River Thames is navigable for reasonably large boats.
On another of England's most significant rivers, the Severn, the highest navigable point is Stourport.
