Is the Watford DC service gappy at the moment because of the 378s being used on the GOBLIN?

Watford DC moved from 3tph @ ~20min intervals to 4tph @~15minutes at the timetable change but they don't have the stock because of the new TT assumed dual voltage 710 (also used on Goblin) taking over and also an enhanced NLL service

Tweet sent out by London Overground regarding 710s coming into service Thursday:

https://twitter.com/LDNOverground/status/1131213186009583616

Replies to people asking if these are in addition are being answered that its the "current timetable" presuably for expectation management but definitely in RTT as extras starting with 1136 ex-GPO, strangely entering service after reversing at Upper Holloway from Willesden...

710261 did the honours as the first unit in service on 2G43 from Gospel Oak at 1136. Pictured here leaving Harringay Green Lanes.

710269 is the other unit on a duty half an hour behind it.

Hooray! Pretty much exactly a year behind schedule (2 I suppose if you count the electrification work). Here's hoping they pull better initial MTINs than the 345s did...

@samuelmorris I'm rather hoping so too. As well as a number of industry figures and journalists, I also noted a handful of Bombardier people on-board.

Certainly with the huge amount of testing, bug-fixing and training, I think we can hope things will bed in ok now.

The passenger environment, by the way, feels an improvement on the 378s. The LCD interior displays are neat and clear (one - facing both ways of course - in each vestibule, and then one at each end of the carriage too), with tube-map style next stop(s) displays and black on pale grey (it certainly wasn't white) text. Aircon was nice and cool on such a warm day, and there are USB points on the pillars by the carriage connectors (an odd place until it was pointed out that it makes sure people remember to take their cables and phones with them!).

They accelerate quickly and run smoothly, too, which was nice. The 378s, off peak at least, have often had to stand for time at stations on the way as they are so much quicker off the mark than the 172s were, and I wonder if we may see the timetable tightened up once everything has settled down, as there is clearly scope to do so.

I've just been on the Class 710's today. It truly was worth the wait. Hopefully more will come in the next few weeks.

TfL tweeted a picture

It’s official!

We now have 2 brand new electric trains running on the
@LDNOverground
btwn Gospel Oak & Barking.

We had a great day at Gospel Oak & thanks to those that attended.

If you were with us, or travelling on the new train, we would love to see your pictures?

Any clues when the 378s are leaving the GOBLIN?

It'd be nice to jump up there and see both of them while it's still there

Are the 710s cleared now for DC operation, I thought that was one of the limitations of the ORR approval (ac only operation), if not then they won’t be on the Watford’s for some time

I think they still have some time. From Geoff's video, they appear to only be reaching for 1 more 710 to get a full 6 units for the GOBLIN rather than 4 (which would be replacing the 3 378s and adding the additional train). I don't think they're in a rush, they need to be confident in the 710s before they can solely rely the service on them.

Saw it go through West Hampstead on its way to Gospel Oak while waiting for an eastbound train but didn't have time to stop off and take a ride.

I was impressed with the 345s so am expecting the 710s to be decent trains. The bigger windows and lack of door pockets should ensure a better view out too

Does anyone know why the 710/2s start at 710256 and why there won't be a 710270, please?

Cheers.

It was suggested back in post #140 that it’s space for the additional follow on options for more 710/1s. Having separate ranges for the last 2 digits means there’s no duplication, there’s a precedent for this sort of numbering with the 350/1s, 2s and 3s.

No idea about 710270 though...

and the 378s. They didn't leave a gap to my knowledge, but despite different subclasses, the last two unit numbers form one continuous sequence. I'm curious what happened to 270 though, I wonder if the number of proposed units was adjusted down by one after the numbering sequence was set up.

Not all the (cheap) add on options were exercised by the deadline so Tfl may still be thinking about more subject to funding at some point

I was told on Twitter that TfL got £25m compensation from Bombardier. That's one hell of a delay repay claim!

Have Bombardier finished complaining about losing the Tube contract to Siemens yet ;)

It's 10% of the contract value. Actually £26m is the figure quoted in the TfL Quarter 4 2018/19 Financial Report which went to one of the Board level committees recently. It is shown as "other income" on the financial numbers for the "Rail" bit of TfL.

Heading for court this October. Alstom have joined the complaining alongside Bombardier - Hitachi.
