Where does RTT get its train formation info from?

This morning I boarded the 1135 Dunblane to Edinburgh service at Stirling, having checked on RTT and seen “Standard class only seating”.

To my surprise a First Class coach was right next to where I was about to board, so I sat in it as I have a through 1st ticket from Edinburgh.

Made me wonder if there had been one when I did the opposite journey on Wednesday.

If they can’t be accurate they might as well not bother saying anything about what class is available.

It's information on what is planned from industry sources. 'On the day', changes take place that are not necessarily reflected in such sources. In addition, the traction type is the timing load, not booked traction that could be very different. RTT is a tool to help, not a definitive record of what trains run where.

RTT was correct. The train was not timetabled to have first class accommodation.

All thats happened is that a train with first class accommodation has turned up on a train booked to be standard class only. Happens everyday on ScotRail.

Does that mean the OP could have had sat in first class at no extra cost because the train was advertised as Standard class only?;)
Yes. If it's shown in the public timetable as standard class only, first class is a free for all. Though obviously won't come with any of the usual first class services (eg. catering etc.).

All Dunblane local services from Glasgow and Edinburgh are Standard Class only. It's just at the moment with spare First Class-equipped 385s just now these often end up on these services.

Having used this route when it was 158s and 170s, I've sat in First Class areas on both train types regularly and never had it questioned by the guard. ScotRail seem a bit more enlightened than other TOCs in this regard.

Presently only the following ScotRail routes offer First Class:

Edinburgh-Glasgow via Falkirk High
Edinburgh-Aberdeen
Glasgow-Aberdeen
Edinburgh-Inverness
Glasgow-Inverness
Some Inverness-Aberdeen (not all do and it varies between Mon-Fri, Saturdays and Sundays so check the timetable!)

We've had this discussion before and not it's not. The TOC doesn't have to let you in the 1st-class accommodation, so it's not a "free for all", but if they do then you can sit there with your standard-class ticket.

Well I had a 1st ticket anyway. It was very nice, only three other people in the coach and great window blinds that cut down the glare without totally obscuring the outside world.

I think you will find, that if a service is advertised in the public timetable as standard only, then they cannot charge you for 1st class, as it does not exist

They can't charge you for it, but they can also refuse to let anyone in it, regardless of tickets or anything.

Yes that's right; if a service is advertised as only conveying 1st class, then it would not be lawful to charge a supplement/upgrade in my opinion.

Yes a train company could mark any part of the train as not for public use.

Scotrails policy is to simply allow all passengers into declassified 1st class.

Same with SWR - there is now no first class on the Windsor lines (Reading lost it in December in preparation for the Aventra downgrade). First class accommodation on the 450s and 458s is available for anyone to use.
