Will they be working on Sunday?
I am spending the day working as a volunteer at the Cemetery overlooking Woodgrange Park Station,
Bit of trainspotting on the side!!!

Seems possible as there are some 2Gxx workings on the line on Saturday and Sunday alongside the more normal 2Jxx workings. None shown for Monday at the moment.

Are they out on the weekend?

TfL's stakeholder notice specifically mentioned weekdays *and* weekends so the expectation is clearly that they will be out at weekends. I was surprised to see the reference to weekend working but I guess TfL's view is that if they are being told the trains "work" then they should be out earning their living. The only thing that is apparently holding back a third 710 train is the need to train more drivers to ensure proper cover (source - G Marshall's video about the 710s where he chats to J Fox of TfL).

So far they seem to be working OK with only one long delay that I've spotted on realtimetrains. Obviously there may be more minor niggles going on as drivers and passengers get used to the trains but looks OK thus far.

I went on the train today - it was absolutely FREEZING!

On one now, there's certainly no need for the AC to be on currently, it's very cold. I can see this becoming a common complaint, already overheard a few comments about the temperature

Its a “sealed” unit. So the HVAC is required to run 24/7.

People will moan about anything maybe they should turn the ac off and let people melt.

You are never going to keep everyone happy with the temperature. It's a brand new train I'm sure the air con is very efficient give it a few months and it will be the same as a 378.

I doubt they are any different than the 345's as tfl spec the temp and the 345 are not cold in the summer they still get warm even with aircon.

Money on 710 but honestly wouldn't be surprised if it was a 378. The 378s aren't great for reliability either!
Both classes had cancellations late Saturday, according to RTT, assuming the 2Gxx and 2Jxx still mean 710 and 378 services as per posts over the last few days...

Does anyone know how many have been built. Can't find a list of how many are built and where they currently are.

I believe the number is around 20. At least 7 units are 7101XXX for the WA. Some at Crewe some at Derby as well as the full Compliment for the GOB across Wilesden/Derby.

Does anyone know why the 710/2s start at 710256 and why there won't be a 710270, please?

Cheers.

Well it bothers the pedantic in me that the range starts at 710256. After all the last 378 is 378257 and the 378/1s and 378/2s do not have overlapping last two digits !. I don't think the other 710s (710101-710131) run anywhere near the 378s so did not need separate number ranges ?.

I think this is really about maintainers, not operations. There’ll be no need to differentiate between 378 and 710 numbering series because they’ll be on different maintenance regimes, the majority of them (ie the West Anglia units) at completely separate depots.

Fair enough but I originally started wondering - why not start at 710201 ?. And I am back there if they would not clash with 378s. Or is it to avoid a clash with some future builds (options) of 710/1s ?.

I confess I am "catching up" on this thread, amongst other threads .

Because that would cause problems with the AC only versions if they were converted to dual voltage.

The numbering sequence takes account of the (cheap) options TfL had in the original contract only some of which they took up. If they want to increase the ELL frequency above 2 extra Palace services they will have to buy more stock for NLL to release some 378s. It also probably take inot account stock needed to double up some of the NLL services as 2x4car with new stock.
The original order was 31 AC only (101 to 131), 24 options (x32 to x55), 14 dual voltage (256 to 269) i.e. a continuous sequence

In the end they ordered 9 extra from the options 3 x 4car DV and 6x 5car DV but we can't be entirely sure on the final numbers for those. Wikipedia quotes numbers above the original sequence for those...

I think that’s a key point isn’t it, it’s not just space for extra trains in the areas the 710s are to be used on, but as you say if they wanted more trains for South London routes they’d transfer more 378s and backfill with more 5 car 710s, as they’re doing with the small number of 5 car 710s in the present plans.

In principle, it seems like any future ELL or SLL extra capacity required won’t ever get new trains, just transfers from the NLL/WLL/DC fleet...

All the 14 original DV (256+) and at least the first 20 of the AC only (101+). Most have never been any where near London.
