A worse situation was in the 1980s at Watford Junction, when the DC line service to Broad Street had been diverted into Liverpool Street. It ran just a few times a day, but one at about 0800 departed at the same time as the express to Liverpool Lime Street, first stop Runcorn, which called at the opposite side of the same island platform......
Speaking of Liverpool, back in the 1950s and early 60s, when Liverpool Exchange still had some long-distance services, there was a train leaving Liverpool Ex. at 5.45pm (as it was presented back then) for stations to Barrow-in-Furness then onto the Cumbrian Coast line.

Monday to Friday this train terminated at Millom, but SO it was extended to Bootle.

I wonder if any rushing, last minute Saturday shoppers ever saw the 5.45pm to Bootle about to depart and jumped on board? (Bootle Oriel Road was known as plain "Bootle" back then, and Bootle New Strand was "Marsh Lane & Strand Rd"). Maybe the steam-hauled carriages in place of the usual Southport Electric would prevent regulars making this mistake, otherwise it was first stop Ormskirk.

I don't think there was ever an Ashford (Kent) to Ashford (Middlesex) service even when there was a connection between Waterloo and Waterloo East.

In steam days there was a train from Edinburgh Waverley formed front three coaches to Berwick on Tweed - back four to North Berwick!

And of course the departure boards at Norwich must be fun with London Liverpool Street and Liverpool Lime Street.

I actually made this mistake once. An American couple approached me in the shop on my voyager at Reading and asked me how they get to Liverpool Street, I asked them Liverpool Lime street and they said yes so naturally I told them to change at Stafford. Train is approaching Oxford when Chris the Train Manager approached me, showed me the tickets and lo and behold they said "London Terminals!"

London Liverpool Street to London Fields.

Completely off-topic, but that LO trip to Cheshunt sounds like it must be a nice, scenic train journey based on the bucolic station names.
After leaving Liverpool Street, the train calls at a Green, a Heath, some Fields, some Downs, then later a Hill, a Grove, a Lane, another Green, a place where Turkeys are reared & another Grove.

Stourbridge Junction to Stourbridge Town

Does calling at multiple stations in the same city really count? If they do, there are trains which serve all four of Manchester Victoria, Manchester Oxford Road, Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Airport.

Then you have the likes of Pontefract Monkhill and Tanshelf. I suspect there are too many of these to really count!

I'm sorry to say, the reality is rather different...

A woman once told me she lived on the International line and had to explain she meant one of these stations.

I suppose if Thameslink serves West Hampstead Thameslink and City Thameslink (formerly King’s Cross Thameslink too).

Was there ever a service from London Charing Cross (CHX) to Charing (CHG)? Charing tends to be served from Victoria, but during railworks could they have been diverted to Charing Cross?

That actually happened. My dad can remember a new work colleague who had only recently arrived in London, who saw the names on the line up through Hackney Downs, thought they sounded very nice, and was rather disappointed when actually travelling along that route.

Not a service, but would I be right in saying that Class 73 and 365 are the only ones to visit both Charing Crosses under their own power, albeit ECS for the 365?

Birchington-on-Sea to Westgate-on-Sea.

Probably dozens more.

What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
South of the mighty Thames, I recall that between Farnham and Havant there are the various stations ending with 'bourne. For example, Fishbourne and Nutbourne are ones I remember.

Also, I am unsure if there has ever been a direct train between Mill Hill (Blackburn) and its plural namesake Mills Hill in Manchester. Both are on what was the ex Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway metals.

Although slightly bending the rules here and from years ago (bearing in mind that the Great Western Railway done "General" stations rather than "Central" stations), I would have a go with Reading General to Wrexham General with a stop at Oxford General (all still existing stations - perhaps Oxford could regain its "General" suffix now that Parkway has opened?).

The Leeds - Southport calls at both Walsden and Walkden.
At Wakefield Kirkgate, I've seen trains for Nottingham and Knottingley in adjacent platforms.

The latter often leave from the same platform (17) at Leeds (though I'm not sure they are both there at the same time, might be in opposite half-hours with the Lincoln/Sheffield via Cas).

Also at Leeds are services to Burley Park and Burley-in-Wharfedale which could often leave from adjacent platforms, along with Burnley Manchester Road also served.

It's quite amusing to look at the A-Z departure board at Leeds and see both Apperley Bridge and Appley Bridge listed. At some point I'm going to do that journey just for the sake of having an amusing ticket!
