Underfloor engines are far noisier for the majority of passengers and induce uncomfortable vibrations and rattles.
That's what I thought. There are good reasons why people lament the replacement of diesel locomotives with DMUs. This country seems to have some very rattly DMUs.

Yes as everything is dictated by Foundry Bridge (outside Station/Hotel Nelson) so I would be amazed if any of the bridges you mention need to open for river traffic ever again.

The Flirt is also low-floor so you couldn't put the engine underfloor even if you wanted

Crown Point has been completely rebuilt inside for trains that in future require practically all maintainence to be done from the side & above rather than underfloor in pits.

Making those footbridges open seems a bit of waste of money now.
Haha you said it. Been several similar comments in the local press especially as the Novi Sad bridge has recently been closed for a few months to have corrective work that didn't come cheap.

The loco doesnt need to take up platform space though

In a lot of stations that are at maximum platform length you simply cannot have a loco or a DVT for example hanging off the edge of a platform, there simply isn't the room without blocking signals, having them on a level crossing or some other obstacle and many platforms cannot be made longer.

Then at terminus/buffer stations of course you have no way of avoiding it.

Because Stadler did not do that example of train being very much based on Euro-style & al so where the only builder capable of delivering bi-modes in the time frame. They will also easily become EMUs (either AC or DC) at the simple removal of the power pack which personally I prefer to underfloor.

The Breckland Line is not going to be electrified in the next 10 years is it though?

Even if it isn't electrified, the power pack makes it easy to change to some other kind of fuel or battery technology - just swap out the power pack with a new one. So if you need more space for storing compressed gas, batteries etc you just build a longer power pack. Avoids the headache of trying to fit everything into whatever space is available under the floor on a fixed length vehicle.

It does at Liverpool St. DVTs & 90s are a waste of 160 or more seats. No platform extensions possible. Their time has come.
Just shows how inflexible and incapable the UK railway is. Instead we end up with InterCity trains with engines under most coaches with a worse environment for passengers as a result: noise and high floors giving poor access. That's before you get on to the maintenance costs with having multiple engines, coolers and ancillary equipment to maintain, when you're better putting it all into one vehicle when you get to five engines or more.

Of course not & I doubt it will be in the next 20 or more either. It makes them valuable to many operators in the future though. A flexible fleet indeed.

True; though I'd class it more as the endemic British trait of short-termism than just blaming the Victorians.

Going to Germany and looking at the long platforms on even quite minor lines and you see just how short-sighted we are.

to be fair, most of the railway in germany and france were more or less completely rebuilt following WW2, allowing them to build a good high spped network, here, we just patched the damage done to the network

The power pack idea is ideal on rural lines like Anglia where they aren't really using up critical platform length.

I think the original IET idea of diesel power cars that could've been replaced later was a better idea but that's off topic

It looked awful last time I used it, I remember when it first went in it looked great at night - all lit up with lights along the footpaths on the bridge on both sides. They seemed to give up and just tarmac over the whole thing and not do any maintenance which is odd considering the council want riverside and king street to be a thriving residential area.

I notice they have a black triangle on front beside number. However the 755 have no first or guard/luggage van so wondered what it might be denoting. From pictures olnine they seem to be on both ends

Perhaps its a placeholder for 755 XXX?

Went to Norwich yesterday and saw a load of them, looking good. The end of the IC70 seating can't come soon enough (though other than that the Mk3s have a very nice interior). I even timed my return journey for a Class 321 to avoid the IC70s.
