As far as i know the platforms at Termini are not wide. To get a whole train on a picture is difficult. From the stationhall i can not remember any thing.

I've had no problems across Italy (major and small stations). As the previous post said though, the platforms at Rome Termini are quite narrow. There may official advice out there but I'm not aware of it - use common sense like anywhere else, no flashes or tripods for example

You must hope that there is no train on the other track and so also other platform. So that you have also no people in the picture. It seems that they have raised the roof of the stationhall. Go to Google Images and you get some pictures what to expect.

Staff in Italy as a whole seemed a bit tetchy but I've never had any issues other than curious traincrews asking what I'm up to. Simple explanation that I was an Interrailing Brit worked fine.

My own experience is that security at Rome Termini is very high. I would not consider doing anything there. This applies to a lesser degree at Termini in other major cities. I had no trouble photographing at stations one or two out from the terminus in several cities. Just be careful.
My only negative experience was watching a Rome metro train reverse and being escorted from the station. They considered me a mad Englishman as I did not speak Italian.

I was in Milan last week - the main Centrale station is fully barriered so you cant get on the platforms without a ticket.

But with a standard single Metro ticket you can get in as a few stations served by regional trains are inside the valid area.

Don’t expect a lot of tolerance though. The rail police doesn’t exactly like photographers, although it seems that they have no real legal base to stop you from taking pictures. Not everyone agrees on this..

My experience of Italian rail police is that they don't much like anyone. It would seem that a significant proportion of their number get a little power-crazed when they put on the uniform and that such behaviour is actually tolerated. Perhaps I have been unlucky...

The German Railways have produced a letter making it clear under what conditions photography is allowed, this can be theoretically be used to show to staff trying to claim all photography is banned, though it might be difficult in practice to deploy when faced with a surly policeman armed with lethal weapons! I believe SNCF have a similar statement. Anything available from FS?
