Transitional liveries

Transitional liveries - what I think - is normally put on a rolling stock when a TOC takes them and puts their brands. These examples in Class 319s, which carries a heavy change of brandings, from NSE to London Midland. There were a range of ex-First Capital Connect and ex-Southern Class 319s operating in the Thameslink region, and elsewhere.

Does anyone else have any other rolling stock which had 'transitional' liveries?

There are still many Northern and TfW trains running around in old livery with the outdated brandin covered up. I saw a TfW 150 the other day where all the Arriva logos had just been blacked out with pen!

I don't think that the re-branding of trains should be a priority for operators, as it non-essentially reduces the amount of available rolling stock, resulting in short-formed services and consequential overcrowding.

The Southeastern Class 377s are in First Capital Connect purple but with light blue doors (and their /1s have got SE logos on the Southern livery).

There was the EMT 158s that were in Northern purple with the bottom half of the N removed, Central Trains 'C' branding at the end of the trains and finally the EMT logos.

As the OP said, that Southern Class 319 wore it into the Thameslink days! I don't even think it was refurbished.

Talking about FCC, the early transitional livery was the original Thameslink livery with the yellow removed. Admittedly I quite liked that livery.

Once there was a First Class 180 that had one coach replaced with one in the Barbie livery (the rest was Dynamic Lines).

To be honest, SWR's liveries are basically unfinished versions of themselves... The actual livery should have the stripes but they haven't really bothered (unfortunately - without the stripes the otherwise nice livery looks unfinished and cheap).

The First TPE 158s were particularly striking with blue/purple First branded vinyls below the window level, with NS Maroon on the rest, complete with the big gold N, now partially covered.

Well, the entire LNER fleet (excluding the couple of 800s they have in service) is in a "transitional" livery based on VTEC's branding. Even the 800s have adopted VTEC's colour scheme for budgetary reasons.

Also, while most of ScotRail's newly-acquired HST trailers are still in de-branded FGW/GWR liveries, there is one set in plain blue with "We're building the best railway Scotland's ever had" plastered along the sides, which surely counts as "transitional".

There are also plenty of SWR units still in SWT colours with new logos applied. It's a similar situation with most Northern units.

The Anglian liveried Class 153s had a good transitional livery when 'one' rebranded to NXEA. Adding an extra white stripe made it look like it was part of the original livery.

They were used like this for quite a while by First Great Western when they transferred over until refurbishment and repaint into Local Lines, with no attempt to cover over the Transpennine Express. It was good when you were waiting for a train and one of these arrived with the declassified First Class, rather than one of the manky ex Wessex 158s.

Now in GWR land, there is a transition of sorts as I have seen DMUs and HST Power cars in plain blue and HST carriages in Dynamic Lines with the ‘First’ and roundel removed leaving just ‘Great Western’.

If not transitional a mix of and old livery’s is common, last week I caught a short slam door HST and the front power car was plain FGW blue, two TSOs GWR green, the last TSO and TGS in Dynamic Lines and the back power car GWR green. So this train had a mixture of branding, GWR and First Great Weatern.

What about the many Class 170 Turbostar transitional liveries...
  • Ex. Central Trains CrossCountry

  • Ex. ScotRail (National Express) First ScotRail
  • Ex. First ScotRail Abellio ScotRail
  • Ex. London Midland West Midlands Railway
  • West Midlands Railway Interim (AKA Tango)
  • Ex. Anglia Railways to ONE then NXEA then Greater Anglia
I think i may have missed a few. But for trains built between 1998 and 2005 there have been quite a few transitional liveries.

There is the London Northwestern vinyl job over LM livery on the 350/2s. It looks utterly awful.

By contrast, the West Midlands vinyl job on the 323s looks better than the proper orange and purple.

At least some of the Northern Rail 170s are still in Scotrail livery, albeit de-branded.
