On Tyrell -which is an internal messaging app for staff - I have LNER, XC and TPE messages coming through, this is because often the information coming through is often partial towards that TOC, but by combining all 3 a bigger picture of what is actually happening can be drawn.

Other feeds are available ;) ( if not, perhaps, as accurate! )

Station reopened. However delays, alterations and cancellations can still be expected until further notice.

Well if it has helped some of you figure out what's going on while stuck in it or altered travel plans to avoid the disruption then Im glad to have helped
I'm nowhere near the incident, being at work down in London, but I wanted to convey thanks regardless. :) It's people like you that make this forum worth being on! Keep it up, and put aside people who want to bring down the good things!

I've tided this thread up. There were numerous off-topic posts and several posts that rose to the level of attacking other members. I would remind everyone that if you see content on the Forum that you believe breaks the Forum Rules or otherwise causes concerns you must report it to the Forum Staff. Responding to it will a) not solve anything and b) generate more work for us when we then deal with it (we have to deal with the original post, your post, the responses to your post, etc etc).

It's now been reported by the BBC.

I do hope that this sentence in the article is a misunderstanding:

BBC said:
Passengers at Leeds were turned away by staff earlier unless their journeys were "absolutely necessary".

What criteria could railway staff possibly use to decide whether a passenger's journey is "absolutely necessary"? What authority do they have to make that distinction? Personally, when I'm using the railway my reason for travelling is my business alone and only I can make the determination as to whether it's "absolutely necessary" or not.

Causing short delays at York. On 0830 to Newcastle. Held for 10 minutes outside York. Platforms looked fairly busy. But fair enough. Some poor sod is likely having a worse day than me not getting a decent coffee until ten minutes later ...

One passenger stuck on a train near Ilkley said he was unable to get to London on his pre-booked ticket and had "no money" to buy a replacement.

I do hope the person quoted on the BBC news article stating that he would now not be able to get to London as he could not afford to buy a second advance ticket having missed his first one due to being stuck near Ilkley has now been correctly advised that he can still travel on the original ticket.

At one stage only Platform 3 was available for trains to call there and this was left for LNER and GC services to run through. 4, 5, 9, 10 and 11 were occupied by cancelled TPE and XC services and there were further TPE and XC services stuck at Skelton Junction due to the congestion at York

LNER are being good. Knock on cancellations (From York) mean they are not only telling people about connecting cancellations (to Middlesbrough ) but also giving them the alternatives. Presumably there’ll be then no rows over ticketing and routing.

Ticket restrictions have effectively been thrown out the window. Any reasonable route regardless of operator

goodness me! The overreaction on this board to minor things. They are hardly going to frog march you away from the station having decided your journey isnt necessary! At worst someone in a high visibility tabbard might ask you if you have an alternative to using the train during this temporary period a period of really bad disruption and suggesting if you do that might get you to your destination more quickly. But I am sure you know this...........

This will be some sloppy reporting from the BBC. It is the usual protocol for NR to advise passengers during periods of serious disruption not to make journeys unless absolutely necessary. The reporter has simply pasted together people being stopped at the barriers because the station was closed with the NR advice.

As I'm sure you're just as aware of as I am, some members of railway staff have an awful habit of overstepping their authority, making up imaginary rules and generally treating their customers with thinly-disguised contempt. Of course they're a minority, but it only takes one to ruin a passenger's day.

I just found it rather strange that a very reputable news source would simply state that people "were turned away by staff" (which doesn't sound like the "suggestion" you're trying to water it down to) on that basis, as though it were a normal and reasonable thing to do. As I said, I hope it's a misunderstanding.

I have never met such a person. I must be very lucky.

I am certain people will be turned away on the basis the station is dangerously full. I am certain messaging will be issued on the basis that please don't travel unless absolutely necessary. I am perfectly happy that is normal and reasonable in situations such as this.

Leeds station was completely closed for a period. Reasonable to assume they were "turned away" during that period

Leeds is still closed.

A managed reopening is currently in progress, however there are still no trains running - on TPE routes at least

You only need to look in the "Disputes & Prosecutions" section of this forum to find a plethora of examples of such behaviour... Clearly you have been exceptionally lucky to never see it first-hand.

That's not what the BBC quote was saying at all. As I said, I hope it was misunderstanding and your ideas are closer to the truth.

In almost all of my ticketing disputes it has been the ticket holder trying to pull a fast one or otherwise avoiding paying the appropriate fare and displaying a poor attitude towards me when I have remained very reasonable in the face of what often becomes personal and abusive. For one well known example Google "Jerry Groody" then pay particular attention to the comments at the end of the article and you will get a good idea of what happened.

Anyway, this is getting off topic. From experience it is common for media and press to mis-interpret and mis-inform, regardless of the perceived quality of the news agency concerned. Something not limited to railway matters. Interpretations based on the information available doesn't nessecarily match the facts and can easily be influenced by bias. BBC I'm looking at you!!! XD

Fixed it

Enough bickering. Stick to the topic of disruption around Leeds. If you want to talk about rail staff allegedly making up rules in this or other cases then do so on another thread. As far as I can tell there is nothing to suggest anything of the sort was taking place other than one quote from one news article. Otherwise stick to the disruption and its known after effects.

Some services are starting to leave now that a lot of the platforms are cleared. Obviously there's massive stock displacement so it may not be right until after the evening rush hour, but it is starting to come back into motion now...

TPE services are on the move through Leeds. however there are only 4 paths per hour available so all 9 headcode TPEs are suspended (Newcastle-Liverpool)

CSL2 “Black” has been declared, usually when this is declared, the decision is made by the Duty Control Manager, along with senior management and on-call Director. This effectively means the advice is do not travel unless absolutely necessary, the same advice we’ve seen during “The Beast from the East” and “Storm (insert name here)”

I’d expect disruption to last well in the afternoon and this evening, so I think that advice is perfectly reasonable.

Again, situations of people being frogmarched away from the station are wildly exaggerated, the station was evacuated anyway, so there was no way of them getting on the station and getting a train anytime soon, anyway.

So the advice of “Look, there’s severe disruption here today, there’s going to be delays and cancellations for most of the day, if you don’t have an immediate need to travel, then we advise that you don’t”. Simple, and reasonable. And if people do need travel they are free to do so, no one is being stopped, but they travel knowing that journey time will be greatly extended with delays and cancellations to their journey.

Interesting looking at how they are bringing services back it looks like absolute chaos out there. My LNER from Edinburgh to York is doing just fine weaving through several tpe trains at Newcastle. Hopefully a train will turn up sometime after I get off at York to get me to Leeds.

If, as suggested above, someone is chained to the footbridge above platform 8, why did the entire station need to be closed down? Did he have a bomb or something?
I had to drive my wife into Leeds for a medical appointment, which was not a problem, but this sort of disruption may have had major effects on people's lives. Not just the simple frustrations of being late for work or losing a holiday because a flight was missed, but such as critical medical appointments/operations missed, job interviews etc.

Its going to be chaos for some time. With the amount of services cancelled, and very limited concourse space at Leeds at the moment with the new roof going on, it will take a while to untangle all the services and get passengers onto their right services. Previously when there has been this level of disruption, i.e. a total station closure it, even without the works going on it has taken quite some time to recover.

Presumably because it was being treated as a serious incident by the Police, and they wanted crowds as far away as possible from the scene.

I wonder if the Delay Repay sites will go down under the pressure? Got to be several thousand people delayed by more than an hour.

Looking out of the window from my office near Whitehall Junction, there are quite a lot of services moving now, so hopefully things will gradually end up where they should be by this evening's rush hour.
