I thought the majority of Newark turns were diagrammed as loco hauled stock urilising class 91s but a shortage of serviceable 91s means 90s are hired in instead?
Of the three return trips on Newark services that are regularly operated by a 90, two are booked to be HSTs and one is booked to be a 91. It is due to a shortage of 91s though - what happens is the 90 does the two Newark returns that are booked to be a HST whilst the HST that'd normally do them does the 12:30 Kings Cross - Newcastle and 16:25 return instead.

The 10.06 and 14.06 from Kings Cross to Newark are booked as electric loco on as part of a single diagram. 12.06 and 16.06 are HSTs as are the intermediate York stoppers in between. The exception is the 7.06 to York hauled by a 91. Last week 90020 and 039 were doing the Newarks.

Correct but in practice the 10:06 is a 91, with the 14:06 being a 90

If it solves any confusion as to what's worked by a HST, what's worked by a 90 and what's worked by a 91 here's the list of Newark/York stoppers from Kings Cross and both what's booked to work then and what usually works them:
07:06 York (91)
09:06 York (HST)
10:06 Newark (91)
11:06 York (booked 91 but until the first 800 entered service this week was fairly often worked by a HST)
12:06 Newark (booked HST but usually worked by a 90)
13:06 York (HST)
14:06 Newark (booked 91 but usually worked by a 90)
15:06 York (HST)
16:06 Newark (booked HST but usually worked by a 90)
19:06 Lincoln (HST

I guess the next question is ..how many weeks/ months do we have left with 90s on Newark/Leeds services?

Think this might be the best place to ask. I’m currently on the 18:33 KGX-BDQ 1D28 which I assumed would be a standard class 91/Mk4 set but turned out to be NL65 with it’s original HST seats and East Midlands liveried class 43’s. I thought this set had gone out of service following the first Azuma coming in two weeks ago? Has it been pressed back into service following all the chaos on the ECML at Leeds yesterday and Peterborough this morning ? Ie is this likely to be my last, unexpected, time sitting on an original 70’s seat in a mk3 on LNER?

It was said in one of the Azuma threads last week that it would be kept available as a hot spare initially, with a booked diagram on Sundays only. In other words it isn’t off lease yet.

Thanks. So my suspicion is likely right that it’s been pressed into use unexpectedly, either due to a failed Class 91 set or the mess of cancelled services this morning. Not that I’m complaining as it makes a nice change from the usual mk4 set I’d been expecting.

It’s been out regularly since it finished on the Hull diagram - make of that what you will!

Nope NL65 is with LNER for a few more months, it operates as a hot spare

Ah Righto, thanks. So I guess the question then is what had the Azuma diagram released, or has it just allowed a bit more slack in the fleet? If that’s the case it does seem a sensible plan, another sign of the seemingly more controlled IEP introduction that LNER are having compared to GWR?

The Satsuma diagram has allowed the first mk4 set to go off lease.

Someone on YouTube has said the LNER HST's have an extended life. Sounds like introduction of further Azumas is being delayed if that's correct.

If they're staying with LNER, then how much longer are we talking?

Right. I can do the Scotrail HST from Edinburgh to Aberdeen and an LNER Azuma back as planned during next year hopefully, subject to all being well of course :)!

I know that's what's supposed to be happening but do we actually know that with absolute certainty?

They can't run post 2019 anyway without a derogation, so far the DfT haven't been very forthwith with these.
Plus there should be plenty of 800s around by December to replace them

Dispensation not derogation, to be pedantic.
