Someone's been wibbling to me that 185 is on tomorrow 5L46 Laira to Ely,,, can anyon confirm? I still need 43185
Sorry to disappoint - here is a picture of it passing Kings Norton earlier today on its way to Ely - future unknown.

It's its second visit to the Midlands within a week, as it was at the rear of the last Paddington-Hereford HST on the great GW farewell last Saturday.

In brief - what are the various exams and how often do they have to be carried out?
For most HST fleets they go from A exam to G exam. An A exam is every 3 days or so. The major ("Level 5") exams are E and above. Typically an E exam is every 2-2.5 years depending on operator and mileage, an F exam every 4-5 years and a G exam every 12-15 years. The major exam sequence is G - E - F - E - F - E - G. Power units and cooler groups are outside this regime and are dealt with separately.

If you want to know more - a lot more - then the forthcoming Inter-City 125 Haynes Manual would be required reading. It can be pre-ordered here: https://www.125group.org.uk/product/haynes-manual-pre-order/

The question is would you have preferred it in sparking FGW blue or cucumber green? It does look careworn, but even in this state it is (or was) a good reminder of what they did look like.

Eventful day for 43002 resulting in alternator overheating and having to be shut down for at least the first hour of the final London to Plymouth non stop leg of the tour. Successfully fired up before Taunton for the last leg over the Devon banks but with 2 traction motors isolated - so the train was only on 1/2 power for about half the journey and 3/4 power for the remainder, but still managed the journey in just over 3 hours - a great achievement under the circumstances despite slowings en-route due to conflicting movements by other trains - and being looped through the platform lines at Totnes rather than the faster through lines. Final time was 3 hrs, 1 min and 4 seconds.

The Totnes area is currently being signalled in 'through routes' as replacement parts to repair some defective equipment in the 1980s installed Exeter PSB area are proving hard to locate. This restricts movements at Totnes to using the platform lines only.

The movements weren’t so much conflicting by other trains; the special was pathed out to run behind some service trains running in their booked paths.
