Does anyone know what these geared drives were used for? The castings are marked L&NER and RSC 4840. They are on display in the underpass to Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery in Carlisle.

They're signal wire adjusters. The signalman would turn a long T handle in the square slot at the top to 'take in' wire (when it's warm it can be too slack to pull the arm off) or 'let out' wire (when cold - if it's too tight the arm won't drop back on properly).

If I remember tomorrow I'll get you a photo of some identical ones still in use.

Here's another sort of adjuster, Midland Railway style, in the preserved St Albans South Box:

Adjusters were usually reserved for the signals furthest away from the box where the wire runs were more susceptible to temperature changes due to their length.

Please find attached a large selection of these adjusters in gainful employment.

To complete the picture here is another example which sadly has to endure life out in the open. The distant to which it is linked is just visible near the engine.IMG_0003.JPG

Some very recent excavating of former railway land at Kingston, to lay the foundations of a new footpath by the railway, has revealed a few relics, bits and bobs discarded over the years, including some pulley wheels for signal wires. I believe that semaphore signalling was replaced during the 1970s, so these have been there for quite some time.
