Surely can't be expensive to lease the 313s a bit longer, it's not like there's a rush for other TOCs to hire them out. Might as well squeeze every penny out at a reasonable price.

The ROSCO has the upper hand and can charge what it likes.

Only five pairs of 313s working today.
58/64 47/49 27/61 18/38 and 44/45. Lots of cancellations due to shortage of train crew

....never shown up. Is it another that has been stood down and hiding at Hornsey or is it still working and I've just missed it?

10 pairs I think. They do Moorgate-Welwyn-Moorgate-Watton-Moorgate and so on.
Sorry my info is out of date. Since the new timetable the units stay on one route at weekends. Five sets for Watton/Stevenage and four for Welwyn. So only nine sets in total now

I was on 313123 only a few weeks ago, and it provided a perfectly decent journey experience apart from the interior being slightly careworn.
It's okay when it is light outside. When it is dark, and especially if it is raining, the lack of any sort of PIS makes it very difficult to know where you are.

How did we cope with 150 years of trains with no PIS or even announcements and no station next train info either!!

and we had to gawp through an inch of grime on the windows at a sign illuminated by a 40 watt tungsten bulb!

On the other hand no repetitive announcements after every station call. No 'see it, say it, sorted' etc.

Completely agree, today, there is to much reliance on IT and less on the human brain.

What about customers who are unfamiliar with the area, customers with disabilities (visual impairment being an obvious one, but, plenty of others as well), or, even customers who’ve perhaps had a few ‘beverages’ and could do with a prompt on when/where to get off?

The PIS benefits everyone… even if it can be annoying at times!

Not saying we shouldn't have PIS and announcements but some of the repetitive drivel they put out is ridiculous. I travelled to work in London today on a class 365 where the driver is able to switch off the PIS and announcements, for the benefit of the regular passengers. I find that repetitive announcements become 'background wallpaper' with no-one paying attention to them making it more likely that you will miss your stop.

The original PIS and announcements on the 365s had it about right imo. No endless waffle but short and concise.

But it is no longer the past. And as stated above,

Of course it can be annoying and of course we never used to have this. But we do have it now. I know my way along the Hertford line, but many of my friends find it very difficult to distinguish where they are at any given point, even whilst paying attention.

I can see both sides of this one, the 313s possibly do have an issue that there’s not a massive amount of window space, with some seat positions being against a hefty bulkhead. I suspect things have become an issue with train interior lights having become ever brighter with platform lighting tending to have got dimmer with conversion to LED (or at least less spread of light).

It’s surprising the 313s never got a PIS, other similar units have (I believe the 315s do?). Evidently this would have cost money, perhaps in the same box as CCTV on the 365s.

I’ll go for a third way on this one - PIS should have been fitted to the 313s. Personally I’d prefer they were staying and a PIS fitted. But to be fair I don’t use the Hertford Loop in the high peak, the couple of occasions when I have done so has demonstrated that it’s a pretty unpleasant experience on the 313s. But at any other time I think I’d take one over a 717.

As an aside, I agree with Hadders that the original 365 PIS got the balance exactly right. The interior screens were also better quality than what’s there now, although I presume they were changed as they didn’t quite meet requirements?

A reminder that this thread is about Class 313 withdrawals. Discussion about PIS can go elsewhere (or be deleted if it continues here!). Thanks :)

A quick glance at my notes suggests 29 GN units remain available for service (happy to be corrected) with 15 having either been dispatched for scrap or stood down from service.

Noted as stood down or no longer extant I have 23-24-25-26-27-28-29-31-43-50-53-55-56-62-63.

If withdrawals continue at the current pace 717 weekend working will soon commence with full 313 replacement not being too far away.

Hi. I remember reading on here that 123 is also withdrawn :)

I've updated my picture blog looking back at the lives and times of the Class 313s with pictures of yesterdays scrap move.https://paulbigland.blog/2018/10/15/the-twilight-of-the-class-313s/ It's also possible that 313055 may be moving to Kingsbury on Thursday, but this hasn't been confirmed.
I have an old photo or two, shot in black & white, of 313s at various locations. Including one at Watford Stadium Halt on the now defunct Croxley Green branch!

Does anyone know if there will be any Class 313 movements in the Didcot area on Saturday 15th? Thanks.

Probably not as most of them go weekdays
Oh OK. Thanks. I didn't realise that they went through Didcot until today.
It's sad to see these units go but as I have never ridden on them I'm not as sad as I was with the HST withdrawal.

Excuse me for being obtuse, but are the Class 313s listed in post #142 no longer existent and have been scrapped? Thanks.

As of the now, five GN 313s have been sent for scrap - 313026,31,50,55,123. The remainder are either in service or stored around the GN network.

Looks like some more will be added to the scrapped list in the coming week, sadly.
